always nice to hear nice things...

okay...

sorry for the missed wednesday; this week i've been--well, it's not babysitting, he's 11--so let's call it babyWATCHING (ha ha, tyler! suck it!) my nephew, tyler and, though my back WAS getting better, messin' around with an 11 year old was probably not the best thing to do. so i've been laid up a bit again and not able to sit at the computer for very long. sorry. i will strive to take better care of myself.
the good news is that, in taking it easy, i was able to finish harry potter last night and, for the sake of thoese readers even slower than me, i will simply say that i LOVED it! what a great story and this, i think, was the best written of the bunch! so sad it's over--so happy that we ever got to go there in the first place! how lucky we all are--on so many levels and in so many ways--to be able to thrill and laugh and cry with these characters...

craig and i were talking about the phenomenon of harry potter and how it's just amazing that there was so much excitment and anticipation in today's society...over a BOOK! that everyone was so desperate to READ! would that there were more books and stories and franchises out there that garnered such mass enthusiasm!

random calvin and hobbes of the week

big plans for the baltimore con are in the works--on botht the perhapanauts and the tellos fronts! more as it develops, but i gotta say, we're really putting a lot into this show! : )

a wonderful review of perhapanauts: second chances from johanna draper carlson over on her COMICS WORTH READING site. now granted, johanna is a friend of ours, but one of the things i love about her the most is her integrity. she calls 'em as she sees 'em and she does NOT gild the lily in any way. i've gotten a...let's say, rocky review from her in the past and must say that it was clean, honest, and was everything that a real, objective review should be. be that as it may, this one is a good one and i urge you to check outy, not only OUR review, but her site on a regular basis. thanks, johanna!

mike, craig, and i are LOVING hbo's flight of the conchords! are YOU...?

randon classic teen titans cover of the week

that's all i've really got today.
been sitting too long as it is.
sorry.
have a great weekend!

a very harry weekend!

okay...

exhausted from the week at camp and very happy to be home with sharon, jake, and kayla, i wasn't about to fight my way through the throngs of muggles waitng in line at midnight outside our local barnes and noble. i had reserved a copy of the audio version of the latest--and lastest--harry, so i thought that it would be perfectly okay for me to leisurely go and pick it up on saturday. i've listened to--and raved about--the audio versions of the potter books--jim dale is amazing!--but i thought that, due to the excitement and importance of this final book, i ought to read it as well and after talking to craig about it, thought it would be fun to see which one of us would finish it first. so i picked up a copy for me and a copy for my dad to give my niece (as it used to be something my mom would give her everytime a new book came out...)

i am currently on page 205 (craig at about 200--i'm winning!) and i am really enjoying it (though a bit anxious as i am really feeling that almost anyone could go at this moment...)!
where are you?

after that, we ran over to the mall to see what time order of the phoenix was playing next. in 10 minutes, as it turned out. also, as it turned out, my old pal, stan, was working as manager and after catching up on comics and life, sharon and i suddenly realized that stan had walked us right into the theater, completely bypassing the ticket booth. thanks, stan--as always... : )

sharon and i enjoyed the movie, though, like the book, it was very dark and lonely. (i really think that warner bros could have served this franchise better by turning harry into a televison series so that they could explore all the nuances of the books and follow the kids--and their predicaments--throughout the entire school year instead of trimming so much of the fun for time. oh well...)

more than all of the harry potter, sharon and i got to spend the whole weekend together, so, for that alone, it was a great weekend!

best intentions...

okay...

it's six-forty-five on friday and, while the day is not completely gone, i myself don't consider this to be an "on time" blog post.
sorry. if you didn't see it over the weekend and only check in from work, well, i'm sorry. in that case you'll have two on monday.

i've been away at a summer camp this past week, doing a workshop on story structure and comics and THOUGHT that i would be home late this morning with plenty of time to get a post in before everyone headed home for the weekend.

unfortunately--or fortunately--my presentation was a hit and i had a few extra sessions added to my schedule at the last minute. needless to say, it was big fun, i met lots of really nice people there, and got to talk about my favorites, comics and storytelling!

while at camp, having no television in my cabin, and wanting to catch up on that way cool 1970's dc comics vibe, i dove deep into the latest showcase offering of HOUSE of MYSTERY vol. 2 (featuring a cover by our pal, nick!) 17 giant sized issues in stunning black and white (and i gotta say, with those horror stories, and the incredible line up of top illustrators that editor joe orlando put on those tingling tales, black and white is truly the way to go...)! some are creepy still, some a bit cliched, but all of them just drip with that creative energy that was hitting it's peak in the dc offices at that time! what a time! just some beautiful stuff!

i don't buy every one of the showcase books, and i don't even read every one i've purchased, but i've really had fun with both of the house of mysterys and can't recommend them enough!

home now and so here's a funny random photo of the week for ya--

if you're a frequent checker-outter of mike wieringo's awesome blog--and if you're not, you SHOULD be--you already know what i got from fedex while i was away...

(stolen directly from mike wieringo's site...)

they're said to be available in stores next month. i'm not sure exactly WHEN next month, but at least we know that they made 'em...
(and that they look great! thanks to image's allen hui, traci hui, eric stephenson, joe keating, and everyone there who made the book look so nice!)

that said, here, as promised,
are the "five on friday"...

1. what was the name of the film that recently depicted the last days of tv's superman, george reeves?

2. what was the name of the film that chronicled the quirky career of late comic andy kaufman?

odds and ands...

okay...

thank you for clicking in to attend this meeting of the perhapanauts cryptozoological expedition and mock mystics association.

our first order of business today would be the reading of last meeting's minutes, but since nobody wote them down...

our second order of business is that my cold and my back are okay. well, mostly. my back is pretty much at about 91 or 92%. and getting better all the time. thanks, everybody, for your well wishes and your suggestions as to how to straighten things out.

next, i am away at a summer camp this week doing my workshop on story structure and comics and so apologize for missing monday. my internet time is somewhat limited and i just didn't get in there on time.

another bit of business is that our friend, and perhapa-pinup artist, michael kasinger--also known in some shadier circles as MEK--has just finished his first sketchbook and you can both check it out--and purchase it at

http://www.indyplanet.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=399

there's some really nice stuff in the book and some cool samples on the site!
congratulations, mek!

because of my back and my cold and whatever else, i haven't had a chance to see any movies over the past few weeks, but am dying to get out to see ratatouille, harry potter and the order of the phoenix, and, if i can still find it around, live free or die hard! also, on that if it's still around is 1408 'cause i LOVE the stephen king and especailly 'cause sharon wants to see it! (though i don';t know how much she'll see with her face buried in my arm...?)

and as craig has pointed out over in his blog, he, mike, and i are LOVIN' hbo's flight of the conchords! too funny and the songs are awesome!

that concludes this week's meeting of the perhapanauts exploration and paranormal nonsense alliance.
there will be trivia on friday.

backing out...

okay...

monday morning i twisted my lower back/hip area while trying to accomodate jake wanting to get into bed. on top of the cold that sharon gave me (thanks, sweetie! : ) i've had a pretty miserable/mostly painful week. s'why there was no post on wednesday and why today's will be so short--my chiropractor pal, beth, told me that i am not to be sitting upright. and she means it!

anyway, sorry for the slow week. if you'd like to have fun and celebrate something click on over to ringo's site www.mikewieringo.com
where's he's just posted--along with a gorgeous sketch of tellos' hawke and serra--his 400th blog entry!! congratulations, brother! here's to many more!

so i gotta run!
i'll post some new trivia on monday to make up for missing today's "five on friday". in the meantime, you should be checking out--and doing well--watching vh-1's world series of pop trivia.

here's a random photo of the week.

roswell

okay...

a few days ago a really good friend of mine, mike west, called me on his cell from roswell, new mexico, to ask me what size t-shirt i wear. i asked why and he said shut up, what size?

so, and i'm just guessing here, i might be getting a t-shirt from roswell.

on the heels of that, craig 'e'd me the other day with this link from his brother, mark. (mark is the meatball man! says johnny...!) mark was wondering why i didn't cover this on the blog. truth is, i just missed it. i've been, thankfully, quite busy these days and haven't truly had the time to check out all my favorite crypto-paranormal sites lately and didn't catch it..

thanks for bringing this to our attention, mark! you da man--da meatball man!

this story is courtesy www. new.com.au and while i've copied it below, feel free to use the link and check out all the other crazy reports they have on the subject.

Roswell theory revived by deathbed confession
From correspondents in Washington
July 01, 2007 12:30am

Roswell PR officer says he saw alien bodies
UFO pieces handed around at high-level meeting
Splat!: are aliens just humans from the future?

EXACTLY 60 years ago, a light aircraft was flying over the Cascade Mountains in Washington State, at a height of around 3000m.

Suddenly, a brilliant flash of light illuminated the aircraft.

Visibility was good and as pilot Kenneth Arnold scanned the sky to find the source of the light, he saw a group of nine shiny metallic objects flying information.

He estimated their speed as being around 2600km/h - nearly three times faster than the top speed of any jet aircraft at the time.

Soon, similar reports began to come in from all over America.

This wasn't just the world's first UFO sighting, this was the birth of a phenomenon, one that still exercises an extraordinary fascination.

Military authorities issued a press release, which began: "The many rumours regarding the flying disc became a reality yesterday when the intelligence officer of the 509th Bomb Group of the Eighth Air Force, Roswell Army Air Field, was fortunate enough to gain possession of a disc."

The headlines screamed: "Flying Disc captured by Air Force".

Yet, just 24 hours later, the military changed their story and claimed the object they'd first thought was a "flying disc" was a weather balloon that had crashed on a nearby ranch.

The key witness was Major Jesse Marcel, the intelligence officer who had gone to the ranch to recover the wreckage.

He described the metal as being wafer thin but incredibly tough.

It was as light as balsa wood, but couldn't be cut or burned.

These and similar accounts of the incident have largely been dismissed by all except the most dedicated believers.

Astonishing new twist

But last week came an astonishing new twist to the Roswell mystery.

Lieutenant Walter Haut was the public relations officer at the base in 1947 and was the man who issued the original and subsequent press releases after the crash on the orders of the base commander, Colonel William Blanchard.

Haut died last year but left a sworn affidavit to be opened only after his death.

Last week, the text was released and asserts that the weather balloon claim was a cover story and that the real object had been recovered by the military and stored in a hangar.

He described seeing not just the craft, but alien bodies.

He wasn't the first Roswell witness to talk about alien bodies.

Local undertaker Glenn Dennis had long claimed that he was contacted by authorities at Roswell shortly after the crash and asked to provide a number of child-sized coffins.

When he arrived at the base, he was apparently told by a nurse (who later disappeared) that a UFO had crashed and that small humanoid extraterrestrials had been recovered.

But Haut is the only one of the original participants to claim to have seen alien bodies.

UFO pieces handed around

Haut's affidavit talks about a high-level meeting he attended with base commander Col William Blanchard and the Commander of the Eighth Army Air Force, General Roger Ramey.

Haut states that at this meeting, pieces of wreckage were handed around for participants to touch, with nobody able to identify the material.

He says the press release was issued because locals were already aware of the crash site, but in fact there had been a second crash site, where more debris from the craft had fallen.

The plan was that an announcement acknowledging the first site, which had been discovered by a farmer, would divert attention from the second and more important location.

The clean-up operation

Haut also spoke about a clean-up operation, where for months afterwards military personnel scoured both crash sites searching for all remaining pieces of debris, removing them and erasing all signs that anything unusual had occurred.

This ties in with claims made by locals that debris collected as souvenirs was seized by the military.

Haut then tells how Colonel Blanchard took him to "Building 84" - one of the hangars at Roswell - and showed him the craft itself.

He describes a metallic egg-shaped object around 3.6m-4.5m in length and around 1.8m wide.

He said he saw no windows, wings, tail, landing gear or any other feature.

Haug 'saw the alien bodies'

He saw two bodies on the floor, partially covered by a tarpaulin.

They are described in his statement as about 1.2m tall, with disproportionately large heads.

Towards the end of the affidavit, Haut concludes: "I am convinced that what I personally observed was some kind of craft and its crew from outer space".

What's particularly interesting about Walter Haut is that in the many interviews he gave before his death, he played down his role and made no such claims.

Had he been seeking publicity, he would surely have spoken about the craft and the bodies.

Did he fear ridicule, or was the affidavit a sort of deathbed confession from someone who had been part of a cover-up, but who had stayed loyal to the end?

The US government came under huge pressure on Roswell in the '90s.

In July 1994, in response to an inquiry from the General Accounting Office, the Office of the Secretary of the Air Force published a report, The Roswell Report: Fact Versus Fiction In The New Mexico Desert.

Weather balloon 'cover story'

The report concluded that the Roswell incident had been attributable to something called Project Mogul, a top secret project using high-altitude balloons to carry sensor equipment into the upper atmosphere, listening forevidence of Soviet nuclear tests.

The statements concerning a crashed weather balloon had been a cover story, they admitted, but not to hide the truth about extraterrestrials.

A second US Air Force report concluded claims bodies were recovered were generated by people having seen crash test dummies that were dropped from the balloons.

Sceptics, of course, will dismiss the testimony left by Haut.

After all, fascinating though it is, it's just a story. There's no proof.

But if nothing else, this latest revelation shows that, 60 years on, this mystery endures.

check out the site. they profess that the flying saucer photo, above, is an actual 'clean' phot that has not been doctored or set up. the autosy photo, they purport as a fake.
whadda YOU think...?

Beneath her coat, she wears a black cocktail dress and black high heels.

Panel 2

Panel 3

Description: Suddenly the woman draws her head back and snaps her arm up between the two of them extending it toward him opened palm now inviting a hand shake rather than a kiss. The man’s expression changes to one of confusion.

SABRINA:

Thank you Mark, I had a lovely evening.

Panel Four:

Mark takes Sabrina’s hand and shakes it. The look on his face now one of disappointment.

MARK:

So did I. Maybe we can do this again some time?

SABRINA:

Maybe . . .

MARK

Would you like me to walk you home?

SABRINA:

No thanks, I’ll be fine . . . (whisper to herself) especially now that I’m out of range of that breath of yours.

Panel 2

MARK

Okay, then . . . I’ll call you?

SABRINA

(thought balloon) Thank god for caller I.D., a girl’s REAL best friend.

Panel 3

MARK

Smooth, Romeo, real smooth.

Panel 4

Date Night by Brian Mulcahy, Page 3
6 Panel Page

Panel 1

Description: Sabrina is walking down a street. Parts of the street are illuminated by streetlights, but parts are in darkness. There are a couple of cars on the streets, but no lights on in any of the windows of the buildings. Sabrina is the only one on the street. The only sound, the clicking of her heels echoing off the walls of the buildings.

SFX

Click, click, click.

SFX

Click, click, click.

SFX

Thump, thump, thump

Panel 3

6 Panel Page

Panel 1

SABRINA: “Huh? I could have sworn . . . ”

Panel 2

SFX

Flap, flap, flap, flap, flap

SABRINA: “Probably just a pigeon.”

Panel 3

Description. Sabrina tightens the belt of her trench coat, turns back the way she was originally headed and starts walking again.

Panel 4

Description: Sabrina takes two steps and then stops short, frozen by what she sees. At the end of the block - on which she stands - is the silhouette of a tall man who appears to be wearing a long flowing cloak.

SABRINA: “Hello . . . ?”

Panel 5

Description: There is no answer from the man. Sabrina does not move, unsure of what to do. About three quarters of a block separate the two.

Panel 6

Panel 1

Description: Frightened, Sabrina turns in the opposite direction and begins to walk away from the man at a rapid pace. The man can be seen in the background gaining ground on her.

Help! Somebody please help me!

Panel 3

Panel 4

Description: Sabrina careens around a corner, almost falling, but righting herself before she falls to the pavement.

Panel 5

Description: Sabrina, who has continued to run down the block glances behind her to gage where the man is and sees only an empty street.

Panel 6

Description: No longer glimpsing her pursuer, Sabrina immediately stops running and slumps against the side of a building. Her breath is heavy and labored and she is sweating profusely with the sweat visible on her face and neck.

SABRINA: “huh, huh, oh my god, oh my god!”

Date Night by Brian Mulcahy, Page 6.

6 Panel Page

Panel 1

Description: Sabrina starts to gather herself and, looking around, notices that Bella Luna, its front window still brightly lit, is only a block and a half down the street.

Panel 2

Description: Sabrina, her heartbeat starting to return to normal, gathers herself and starts walking toward Bella Luna.

Sabrina: “Well, that’s enough exercise for one night. I think I’ll ask Luigi to call me a cab.”

Panel 3

Description: As Sabrina is walking toward Bella Luna she begins to pass in front of a darkened ally.

Panel 4

Description: A powerful arm shoots out of the darkness of the ally and grabs hold of Sabrina’s left arm.

Panel 5

Description: Sabrina is pulled so quickly and violently into the alley that one of her shoes comes flying off and lands on the sidewalk.

SABRINA

Ahhhhhhhhh!

Panel 6

Description: Once in the ally, the arm releases Sabrina and she is sent stumbling back against one wall of the ally that is illuminated by light from one of the streetlights.

Date Night by Brian Mulcahy, Page 7

6 Panel Page

Panel 1

Description: Sabrina quickly rights herself, takes off her remaining shoe, braces her back against the wall and, while clutching her shoe like a weapon, scans the ally trying to find her assailant.

SABRINA

If you come near me, I swear to god, I’ll drive this heel right into your skull

VAMPIRE (OP)

Right idea, wrong body part.

Panel 2

The cloaked man who had been chasing Sabrina emerges from the shadows gliding towards Sabrina. His features are still obscured by the darkness with the exception of two glowing red eyes coming toward her.

SABRINA

What . . . what do you want from me?

VAMPIRE

Well, since you were kind enough to ask, all this running around has made me a little . . . thirsty.

Panel 3

Description: Suddenly, without Sabrina seeing him move, the vampire is behind her.

VAMPIRE

But a brief moment of pain, my dear, followed by an eternity of pleasure.

Panel 4

Description: The vampire bends Sabrina’s head to the left to expose her neck. The sweat beaded up on Sabrina’s neck can be seen glistening in the light coming into the ally from the streetlight.
Date Night by Brian Mulcahy, Page 7 (continued)

Panel 5

Description: The vampire lowers his head towards Sabrina’s neck, his fangs now exposed.

Panel 6

Description: The vampire sinks his fangs into Sabrina’s neck.

Date Night by Brian Mulcahy, Page 8

3 Panel Page

Panel 1 (half-splash)

Description: The vampire’s head recoils from Sabrina’s neck with smoke and flames shooting out of his mouth. At the same time, the vampire instinctively thrusts Sabrina away from him pushing her back towards the sidewalk just outside of the ally.

VAMPIRE

AHHHHHHHHHH!

Panel 2

Description: The vampire, still screaming, stumbles away from Sabrina heading deeper into the ally clutching his still smoking head with both hands

VAMPIRE

Ahhhhhhhh!

Panel 3

Description: Sabrina lies on the sidewalk, one shoe still clutched in her hand, the other beside her on the sidewalk. She appears dazed and out of it. In the background, Mark can be seen running toward her.

Date Night by Brian Mulcahy, Page 9

6 Panel Page

Panel 1

Description: Mark has now arrived and is standing over her looking down with concern.

MARK

Sabrina, I heard screaming, are you all right?

SABRINA

“Mark . . . ?”

MARK

Here, let me help you up.

Panel 2

Description: Mark leans down and lifts Sabrina to her feet. In doing so, he brings her face close to his and his head recoils.

MARK

Whew . . . Sabrina . . . sorry, but you reek of . . .

SABRINA

Brimstone?

MARK

No, garlic.

Panel 3

Description: Sabrina disengages from Mark, and begins to gather herself together

SABRINA

Uh . . . well . . . so do you Mark. That’s why I didn’t want to kiss you earlier. I love Luigi’s cooking, but he can go a little heavy on the garlic at times.

MARK

Sorry, I didn’t even notice. You know, I think I read somewhere that if you eat enough garlic, it doesn’t just come out on your breath, but it can actually seep out through your pores and even comes out in your sweat

Panel 4

Description: Sabrina leans one arm on Mark to steady herself as she puts on her shoes.

MARK

So, what happened to you tonight?

SABRINA

I’m . . . I’m not sure. It’s all a little hazy, but I think someone tried to mug me. I guess it’s lucky for me you were still here. You must have scared him off. By the way, Mark, why are you still here?”

Panel 5

Description: Mark extends the crock of his arm to Sabrina inviting her to link her arm with his.

MARK

Well, I got about half way home and I was feeling a little down about the way our date ended, so I thought I’d treat myself to one of Luigi’s world famous desserts. Care to join me?

SABRINA

I’d be willing to share a cannoli, but on one condition.”

Panel 6

Description: Sabrina, with a small mischievous grin on her face and a slight red gleam in her eye, links her arm with Mark’s as the two start towards Bella Luna.

MARK

What’s that?

SABRINA

I get the last bite

monday morning rock

okay...

that's for sharon...

i'm pretty sure that we all do this...
there are some words or phrases that trigger snippets of songs or a bit of dialogue from a movie or show or even a saying or something that some close friend or relative used to say.
a lot of mine are song lyrics or titles and usually i then am cursed with having that song play in my head for the rest of the day. all day. and you...just...can't...get it...out!!
(my pal, jeff mccluskey, recently told me that the one song that will negate absolutely ANY song that you have stuck in your head is to think about neil diamond's "comin' to america". but then, of course, you have that mother_____er stuck in your head. thanks, jeff.)

anyway, there are lots of monday songs and most of them aren't too kind to our first day of the week.
monday monday by the mamas and the poppas
rainy days and mondays by the carpenters
i don't like mondays by the boomtown rats
manic monday by the bangles

but my favorite monday song is monday morning rock by marshall crenshaw.

there have been lots of times in my life when i've been on the ground floor of something, and i'm sure that it's happened to you on occasion too. when you tip to something--some new music or show or something--that you just KNOW is gonna be big. and most of 'em get big. i was hip to steve martin long before he got small. i word-of-mouthed raiders of the lost ark, back to the future, and the "take on me" video by a-ha. and i knew after watching the first five minutes of "friends" that it was gonna be huge.
my "discovery" of marshall crenshaw and his ideo-pop, retro-rock sound back in the early eighties was, i was sure, another early 'i found it first'. his stuff just sang to me and i was certain that it would for everybody else too! i played it for all of my friends and waited for fame to catch up with him, certain that he was gonna be as big as bruce.
sadly, that didn't happen.
marshall is an awesome talent, certainly an under-appreciated artist, and for one reason or another, one that stays off the radar. some of his hits have received some great radio play--someday, someway, whenever you're on my mind, cynical girl, you're my favorite waste of time--but there are scores more of great, great somgs that i am amazed didn't make it onto the airwaves.
one of those songs--monday morning rock--was definitely not the bsty song off his second album, field day, but any time someone says the words "monday morning", my mind adds "rock"...and i'm listenin' to marshall for the rest of the day.

and that's not a bad thing.

(until somebody mentions neil diamond...)
