okay...
after focusing so intently on the play these past three months, i came to that bittersweet point about a week or so before the play actually goes up when you realize that it will all be over soon. yes, exciting, all that hard work will finally be on display for all to see, we've put on a show, the lights, the curtain, the audience--! also, the sad realization that these people with whom you've worked so hard, become friendly with, in some cases, grown quite close to, you'll all be going your separate ways, back to your own lives, back to the routine...
and while that part always makes me sad, i was looking forward to getting back to the routine. even to the point of thinking of last monday as more of a new beginning. i was looking at the end of the play as an opportunity to make some changes and start out fresh. isn't that what spring is about...? or maybe it was more like new years--complete with some unspoken resolutions; write more, exercise more, eat better...i couldn't wait.
then sharon said, "well, yeah. you can do that after your cold."
i said, "what?"
she said, "yeah, after every play you do, you get a cold. you push yourself to the limit and your immune system is jacked up on energy and adrenaline and then it crashes and you get a miserable cold. every time."
i said, "what?!? no, i don't!! don't jinx me, woman!!"
and i felt great.
until wednesday.
wednesday night i started getting all congested and by thursday night i was a mess.
and it was worse because, though i was doing the usual treatment of dayquil and nyquil, i haven't been getting a lot of rest these past few months because jake is an old man now and needs to go out several times during the night. so not a lotta rest.
so i'm tired and sick and doped up on nyquil and not getting a lot of work done, by the way, when i look at my calendar on saturday afternoon and realizee that the one-day albany comic con is THE NEXT DAY and how am i ever gonna be able to go...! also, how did that creep up on me, wasn't it NEXT WEEK?! and i realize that is IS next week and i lost a whole week to this cold and i don't even know what day it is.
so somehow, the next day, sunday morning, i get up and, with sharon's help, rally myself for the show. i drink a lotta tea with lemon, throw some fisherman's friends in my pocket and double-dose the dayquil. i drive up to albany while listening to the entertaining and comforting voice of jim dale reading me harry potter and the deathly hallows and feel pretty good as i arrive and set up, giving cursory waves and apologies for not shaking or hugging to my pals terry austin, ron marz, and joe staton. i put out some superhero squad comics--along with a few of my own personal squaddies for fun--and both kids and parents swarm my table so that i sell every issue in less than an hour.
i'm feelin' pretty good, chatting with friends old and new, but it's all a bit foggy, y'know, just a bit...off...
and that's how, even though we chatted for a while before i realized that i was talking with our own adam hutchinson and didn't even know it. recognized him--and his friend, mike--but couldn't put i all together. i felt horrible. horrible.
so sorry, adam. and mike.
we see a lot of people at shows, many very familiar faces--but, even though i hadn't seen you for a little over a year and a half--you're family.
i feel so bad...
so sorry, adam--i can't apologize enough.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
i had a great time at the show talking with adam and mike and the usual gang from earthworld and more...
and i wasn't too muzzy-headed not to get a couple pictures of this supergirl for the blog.
you're welcome.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
gotta go now.
running late!
wanna write more!
exercise more! eat better!
okay, maybe one more shot a' nyquil...

song of the scarlet spider...!
okay...
i can't recall if i've addressed this topic here on the blog anytime in the past...(having done over 700 posts...who knows?!) but something very interesting has been happening these past few years and it seems that i can no longer avoid it...
see, when i was fortunate enough to land a regular writing gig at marvel all those many years ago, i was also fortunate enough to be involved in what, at the time, seemed like a very special epoch in the spider-man mythos--the clone saga! spanning across the four titles that comprised the spiderman line--amazing spider-man, spectacular spider-man, peter parker spider-man, and sensational spider-man--and over a period of almost two and a half years (!!), we four writers--tom defalco, marc de matteis, howard mackie, and myself--put poor peter parker and his maybe clone, ben reilly, through some of the craziest, most gut-wrenching, emotionally devastating moments in comics history! and while it certainly became the most interesting and addictive story lines at the time, we were soon condemned for it's sprawling contrivances and whiplash-inducing plot twists. it seemed out of control.
and it was.
while we (four) were doing the best we could with the subject at hand, our spider-editor, bob budiansky, was taking his cues from the sales department, urging us along based on their suggestions. while we were trying to tame the beast that the clone saga had become, they were throwing more and more into it--yes, including the kitchen sink.
ultimately, bob left and editor ralph macchio was brought in to help us make some sense of the thing and put it to bed--and i think he--and we--did a pretty good job pof that...
sadly, though, for the longest time, the term "clone saga" left a bad taste in the mouths of any true spider-fan.
over the past few years, however, at conventions and through facebook and myspace contacts, i've noticed a new...shall we say fondness?...for ben reilly and the scarlet spider. an appreciation for all those stories that i had considered lost to the sands opf controversy. readers have started praising that huge gallumphing tepic and even long for the days of the crazy new twist every week or so!! ten years later--they love the clone!
enough for the back issues of those books to start selling for big money at comic shops and shows! for marvel to begin reprinting the entire tale in what is sure to be one of the largest single collections ever complied! and my pals tom defalco and howard mackie have written a recent miniseries called spider-man: the clone saga--giving scarlet spider fans a chance to rejoice--and embrace--the long-absent ben reilly!
with all of that in mind, here is an interview i recently did with shawn mallory form the website, sequential daze
http://www.facebook.com/l/fdd12;www.renderwrx.net/sequentialdaze.htm
check it out...

best of the blog: it's superman!
Wednesday, September 26, 2007
okay...
i got this e-mail last night from my pal, gorilla brother, and current collaborator, karl kesel, with the opening line;
"weirdest-ass thing in our paper today"...
POLICE PROBE "SUPERMAN" SIGHTING
Police are investigating after villagers in Romania claimed to see a Superman-like figure flying through the sky.
Almost 20 villagers, from Gemeni, Mehedinti county, claim the UFO was wearing a shiny blue suit, just like Superman's.
Police officers took written statements from all of the witnesses and say they described the figure in the same way.
Local policeman Ion Anuta said: "We talked to people of different ages who are all reliable citizens in our village.
"They all said they saw this strange creature who flew over their houses in his shiny blue costume. We'll just have to see what happens next."
Villager Constantin Toader, 41, said: "He looked like Superman and was flying slowly at about 100 yards from the ground in a standing position. He didn't make any smoke or sound. Just cruising around."
(from www.ananova.com)
he also included a link to
supermanhomepage.com/news.php?readmore=3953
which features this picture
karl said he felt the whole story had a kinda mothman feel to it. i'm down with that, but--and maybe it's just cause of the grainy photos of something floating in the sky--i'm getting a real m.night shyamalan "signs" vibe from it. like maybe these guys are gonna start showing up over every major city soon and then begin the invasion.
now, i've said it here before, time and time again, i WANT to believe. i would really love for this to be an actual flying man, whether of terran or alien origin. i WANT that and have my fingers crossed...
but.
i'm betting on a balloon.
it's a great idea--i know I'D do it.
i'm guessing, from the way it's "flying slowly at about 100 yards from the ground in a standing position." that it's a man-shaped balloon--maybe even an inflatable sex doll, they inflate really well with helium. (i have been told.) (also, floating in a standing position? what self-respecting person with the power of flight would just float around in a standing postion? i would be supermanning all over the place!)
but, who knows?
i'm hoping it's real.
thanks, karl! great story!

Hello everyone! We decided to release Brick and Tiger Vs. The Confederate Army on youtube today! I know that many of you have seen it already, but I thought you might like the links anyways. Also, I would not be offended (and in-fact, would be grateful) if you wanted to post the links or at least the first link on your facebook/twitter/whatever today. Thanks for all the support. We start rolling on the next Brick and Tiger here soon! Thanks again.

today, i guess, i a return to the strange and unexplained as i've received a couple of cool items of crypto-news for you and yours. the first one comes from warren (newsom) and features a guy in possession of a strnage skull that secretes a weird fluid...

Black-Eyed Knocker
BY KV
By Stephen Wagner, About.com Guide
I don't know if this is paranormal, honestly. I don't know what to call this, but it is the most significant thing that has happened to me and I will never forget it. I live in a suburb of Detroit, Michigan. I am 34 years old and teach World History at a local school. This event happened to me on a Saturday evening, sometime in September in 2004.
I had been home for most of the day trying to fix the water heater. It's that time of day where it is starting to get dark outside. As I was getting ready to give up with the water heater, I heard a knock on the door. Just a single knock. I wasn't sure what it was, but I ignored it. About 30 seconds later, I heard another knock. I stood up and walked over to the door. For some reason, I was feeling very uneasy. My heart started to beat very hard and it was all I could hear at this point.
I decided to take a look out the window to see what was going on. I saw a middle-aged woman standing on the sidewalk looking toward my house. I felt like I knew her, thinking she was a neighbor of mine. The beating of my heart had gone down and I felt normal again. I went to the door and opened it to see what was the matter.
As I opened the door, the woman walked toward my house and stopped about 6 feet in front of me. As I looked into her eyes, it was as if nothing was there. I could not form a thought, I could not perceive the rest of the world. It was as if nothing existed and I was no longer in control of my body. I was overrun with fear. My body felt numb. I felt like I was in a shell. I could see nothing in her eyes, no emotion, no life; they were just black. There were no whites to her eyes, just darkness.
As I stood there completely in shock, not able to move, she said, "Let me in." Her voice was normal, but as soon as she said this, the whole world turned black. I felt like I was dying just being around her. I quickly shut the door and locked it. I was too terrified to even look out the window. I have never seen this person again, but day today I can feel her. I can feel her presence. It's like I am no longer a part of my body when I feel her. I go into a panic mode, as if I am about to die. I have also seen her in my dreams since then. Most nights are like fighting a force in my dreams, trying to get away from my own mind. It's as if she has taken over. It's as if the moment I opened the door, she gained access to me.
You can leave a haunted house, but you can't leave a haunted body. But then again, I don't know what she is.

mish mash...
okay...
i'm in full-tilt, drivin'-it-home, get-it-all-done mode for this play (drawing props and re-working some scenes on the new set...) and so i'm just gonna start throwing pictures at the blog today and see whatcha think...
first up--it's the second wednesday of the month and that means it's the day you RUN!! (don't walk) down to your local comic book shop and scream for--nay! DEMAND!!--the latest issue of MARVEL SUPER HERO SQUAD!! it's number four and it's filled with funny squaddie goodness featuring guest-stars like drax the destroyer, man-wolf, and the collector! also, most of the marvel universe! don't miss it!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
while we're on the subject of the squaddies, i can remember two julys ago, having to write a christmas issue of marvel adventures: spider-man and laughing at the need to get out the a christmas story and it's a wonderful life dvds so that i could get in the spirit...christmas in july.
this week, the sitch is that i'm penning the super hero squad halloween issue--and i'm just not ready to get my head there yet...
so i dug up these (awesome! cool!) classic marvel monsters covers from the early 70s for some spooky inspiration...
i think i'm there now...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
and here are a couple of images i have floating on my desktop;
this lovely phantom lady by my super hero squad artist marcelo dichiara
this stunning rogue by salamandros
calvin's little skeleton cracks me up...
no caption.
and finally, last but certainly not least, this wonderful choopie from artist gary drew (via our pal, dave tilley)
come see alice~!

ALICE IN WONDERLAND!! (fri/sat/sun at dcc!)
okay....
as some of you might know, i have, for the past few months, been working as co-director on a production of ALICE IN WONDERLAND at dutchess com col with my old theater teacher/mentor/friend steve press! it is huge and it has been a lot of (FUN!) work and i am so proud of all of our actors and set-builders and costumers and dancers and choreographers and stage manager (hi, sami!) and EVERYONE and--if, by chance, you are within the sound of my voice--i think you should come and SEE all the hard work all of them have put into it! also, some parts of it, i think, are hilariously funny!
the show goes up this weekend--april 16, 17, 18--with performances on friday and saturday at 7pm and matinees on saturday and sunday at 2pm! if you're in the area, come and support local theater and the performing arts program and see a great show!
here are some pre-costume publicity pics...
our alice--alicia emmons--with tweedledee and tweedledum--will szigethy and tom jones...

...with the sheep, jonah acosta...
...with the slumbering red queen and white queen, katie greaven and grace obee...
...the mock turtle, tom bunker...
...and with the eaglet, the duck, and the dodo--nicolette curcio, cat lugones, cassie villavicencio...
that's it for me!

as some of you might know, i have, for the past few months, been working as co-director on a production of ALICE IN WONDERLAND at dutchess com col with my old theater teacher/mentor/friend steve press! it is huge and it has been a lot of (FUN!) work and i am so proud of all of our actors and set-builders and costumers and dancers and choreographers and stage manager (hi, sami!) and EVERYONE and--if, by chance, you are within the sound of my voice--i think you should come and SEE all the hard work all of them have put into it! also, some parts of it, i think, are hilariously funny!

johnny!
okay...
so, imagine that you're 5, that you're out at dinner with your family, that there are crayons on the table, but nothing much to color on the cheap paper placemat there in front of you...
and now imagine that your dad just happens to be a fairly well-known comic book artist for marvel comics and that, hey! maybe he could sketch you up something fun featuring your favorite web-slinging super hero for you to color!!
how lucky is this kid?
he's starting to realize that everybody's father doesn't draw comics...but only just.
very cool.
oh, also, he sends it off to his uncle todd who decides to exploit both of their talents one friday on his blog.
here ya go--spider-man battling venom and doctor octopus on a placemat by craig and johnny rousseau!
so it started with johnny and me comparing our action figure collections last fall. when he would come to visit here or i would go to visit there, he and i were always playing with the action figures. i had taught him all the cool games to play with them that i had made up with my now older niece and nephew; bowling for action figures, hide and seek with action figures and, of course, making your action figures beat the heck out of each other. big fun, everyone should try them!
being 5, johnny always had more action figures than me, but that's mostly 'cause he has more time on his hands. (for the longest time, it didn't impress him that his dad and uncle todd actually had something to do withy the comics he was reading, that came later...) now though, johnny was introducing me to his vast collection of the animated spidey and his many foes and, as fate would have it, these tiny squashed looking versions of the marvel heroes called the super hero squad! johnny had 'em all!
after our last visit, back in november, johnny started drawing some of his favorite spidey foes for me and having dad send them over in an email. great stuff! gangster and robot versions of rhino and kraven--just too cool for school! i loved 'em!
then, while we were chatting on the phone, i told johnny that he should pose his action figures and take photos of them like peter parker! so now we had a cool new game and johnny was putting me to shame. the other day i finally got my spidey figures out and put together a couple of scenarios that you might enjoy...here are my pics for the daily bugle along with my captions that jonah will probably change...!
SPIDEY SNAGS THE SANDMAN!!!
DOC OCK HAS SPIDEY ON THE MAT!!
THE HIGH-FLYING VULTURE SOARS EVER HIGHER...BUT SPIDEY HANGS ON!!!
SPIDEY PUTS ELECTRO WHERE HE BELONGS--BEHIND BARS!!
have a great weekend!
i'll be here on monday with an alice in wonderland update!

roswell
okay...
a few days ago a really good friend of mine, mike west, called me on his cell from roswell, new mexico, to ask me what size t-shirt i wear. i asked why and he said shut up, what size?
so, and i'm just guessing here, i might be getting a t-shirt from roswell.
on the heels of that, craig 'e'd me the other day with this link from his brother, mark. (mark is the meatball man! says johnny...!) mark was wondering why i didn't cover this on the blog. truth is, i just missed it. i've been, thankfully, quite busy these days and haven't truly had the time to check out all my favorite crypto-paranormal sites lately and didn't catch it..
thanks for bringing this to our attention, mark! you da man--da meatball man!
this story is courtesy www. new.com.au and while i've copied it below, feel free to use the link and check out all the other crazy reports they have on the subject.

Roswell theory revived by deathbed confession
From correspondents in Washington
July 01, 2007 12:30am
Roswell PR officer says he saw alien bodies
UFO pieces handed around at high-level meeting
Splat!: are aliens just humans from the future?
EXACTLY 60 years ago, a light aircraft was flying over the Cascade Mountains in Washington State, at a height of around 3000m.
Suddenly, a brilliant flash of light illuminated the aircraft.
Visibility was good and as pilot Kenneth Arnold scanned the sky to find the source of the light, he saw a group of nine shiny metallic objects flying information.
He estimated their speed as being around 2600km/h - nearly three times faster than the top speed of any jet aircraft at the time.
Soon, similar reports began to come in from all over America.
This wasn't just the world's first UFO sighting, this was the birth of a phenomenon, one that still exercises an extraordinary fascination.
Military authorities issued a press release, which began: "The many rumours regarding the flying disc became a reality yesterday when the intelligence officer of the 509th Bomb Group of the Eighth Air Force, Roswell Army Air Field, was fortunate enough to gain possession of a disc."
The headlines screamed: "Flying Disc captured by Air Force".
Yet, just 24 hours later, the military changed their story and claimed the object they'd first thought was a "flying disc" was a weather balloon that had crashed on a nearby ranch.
The key witness was Major Jesse Marcel, the intelligence officer who had gone to the ranch to recover the wreckage.
He described the metal as being wafer thin but incredibly tough.
It was as light as balsa wood, but couldn't be cut or burned.
These and similar accounts of the incident have largely been dismissed by all except the most dedicated believers.
Astonishing new twist
But last week came an astonishing new twist to the Roswell mystery.
Lieutenant Walter Haut was the public relations officer at the base in 1947 and was the man who issued the original and subsequent press releases after the crash on the orders of the base commander, Colonel William Blanchard.
Haut died last year but left a sworn affidavit to be opened only after his death.
Last week, the text was released and asserts that the weather balloon claim was a cover story and that the real object had been recovered by the military and stored in a hangar.
He described seeing not just the craft, but alien bodies.
He wasn't the first Roswell witness to talk about alien bodies.
Local undertaker Glenn Dennis had long claimed that he was contacted by authorities at Roswell shortly after the crash and asked to provide a number of child-sized coffins.
When he arrived at the base, he was apparently told by a nurse (who later disappeared) that a UFO had crashed and that small humanoid extraterrestrials had been recovered.
But Haut is the only one of the original participants to claim to have seen alien bodies.
UFO pieces handed around
Haut's affidavit talks about a high-level meeting he attended with base commander Col William Blanchard and the Commander of the Eighth Army Air Force, General Roger Ramey.
Haut states that at this meeting, pieces of wreckage were handed around for participants to touch, with nobody able to identify the material.
He says the press release was issued because locals were already aware of the crash site, but in fact there had been a second crash site, where more debris from the craft had fallen.
The plan was that an announcement acknowledging the first site, which had been discovered by a farmer, would divert attention from the second and more important location.
The clean-up operation
Haut also spoke about a clean-up operation, where for months afterwards military personnel scoured both crash sites searching for all remaining pieces of debris, removing them and erasing all signs that anything unusual had occurred.
This ties in with claims made by locals that debris collected as souvenirs was seized by the military.
Haut then tells how Colonel Blanchard took him to "Building 84" - one of the hangars at Roswell - and showed him the craft itself.
He describes a metallic egg-shaped object around 3.6m-4.5m in length and around 1.8m wide.
He said he saw no windows, wings, tail, landing gear or any other feature.
Haug 'saw the alien bodies'
He saw two bodies on the floor, partially covered by a tarpaulin.
They are described in his statement as about 1.2m tall, with disproportionately large heads.
Towards the end of the affidavit, Haut concludes: "I am convinced that what I personally observed was some kind of craft and its crew from outer space".
What's particularly interesting about Walter Haut is that in the many interviews he gave before his death, he played down his role and made no such claims.
Had he been seeking publicity, he would surely have spoken about the craft and the bodies.
Did he fear ridicule, or was the affidavit a sort of deathbed confession from someone who had been part of a cover-up, but who had stayed loyal to the end?
The US government came under huge pressure on Roswell in the '90s.
In July 1994, in response to an inquiry from the General Accounting Office, the Office of the Secretary of the Air Force published a report, The Roswell Report: Fact Versus Fiction In The New Mexico Desert.
Weather balloon 'cover story'
The report concluded that the Roswell incident had been attributable to something called Project Mogul, a top secret project using high-altitude balloons to carry sensor equipment into the upper atmosphere, listening forevidence of Soviet nuclear tests.
The statements concerning a crashed weather balloon had been a cover story, they admitted, but not to hide the truth about extraterrestrials.
A second US Air Force report concluded claims bodies were recovered were generated by people having seen crash test dummies that were dropped from the balloons.
Sceptics, of course, will dismiss the testimony left by Haut.
After all, fascinating though it is, it's just a story. There's no proof.
But if nothing else, this latest revelation shows that, 60 years on, this mystery endures.
check out the site. they profess that the flying saucer photo, above, is an actual 'clean' phot that has not been doctored or set up. the autosy photo, they purport as a fake.
whadda YOU think...?
that's all for now--see ya wednesday!

southern fried bigfoot
bigfoot
okay...
about two years ago, i met up with writer/director/bigfoot documentarian sean whitely on myspace and, since i know a little bit about the subject and have a close personal friendship with the big guy (see above), sean offered me a chance to pre-view his film with the hopes that maybe i'd write a blurb for the dvd cover (ha! thought i. what a maroon! like anyone would care what i thought of anything...) i tried to tell him that he was making a big mistake, but he was kind enough to send me a copy of the disc anyway.
that was, like, november.
of 2008.
in my defense i'll say that though i, of course, devoured it right away, the screener copy that sean sent me was clean all the way through until the last ten minutes where is suddenly started to stall and digitize and was all corrupted and stuff. so i never got to see the entire thing.
until last week. 'cause sean was nice enough to send me a new clean copy that i eagerly loaded into the player the other night and just got lost in it all over again.
now, having immersed myself in the entire southern fried bigfoot experience. i humbly submit the following...
"While most of us feature the Pacific Northwest as the generally accepted stomping grounds of anything Sasquatch, Sean Whitely and his talented Crew beg to differ and offer, as a complete and compelling argument, this comprehensive journey through the swamps and backwoods south of the Mason-Dixon Line to shed some light on the other American Bigfoot Legends--the ones we've heard far too little about!
"The Filmmakers not only expose these hidden hominids to the light--The Fouke Monster, The Honey Island Swamp Monster, The Florida Skunk Ape, and The Lake Worth Monster--relating tales of sightings and incidents via first-hand eye-witnesses when available, but also delve into the history of each area and the folklore that surrounds these crypto-creatures.
"Southern Fried Bigfoot is the closest any true Bigfoot Researcher is going to get to going on an expedition to track down the elusive giant without actually getting off the couch!"
Todd Dezago--Writer, Sensational Spider-Man, Tellos, The Perhapanauts.

so, i'm still neck-deep in alice in wonderland and though i'm having huge fun, it is both time-consuming and exhausting. and (a little frustrating--i'm having a hell of a time with people who jerking me around regarding elements of the set. like, the whole set.) saturday was load-in and i spent the dqy approving costumes (and having fun lunch with the girls...), drawing and coloring props and scenery, delegating various prop constructions, building a hookah, cutting out flamingos, balling yarn, and watching martina create some amazing things with make-up!
it's gonna be fun, but here are a couple of the images i used for inspiration...'cause i got nothing else...
'kay.
that's it.
i gotta go fight with a guy about a jungle gym.
smell ya later~!
