okay...
so--and i've said this before--every month or so i run through my favorite paranormal sites in search of new news or sightings or evidence or whatever in regards to the strange and the unexplained. i read ghost stories and ufo stories and stories of any bizarre creature that may have made an appearance but was somehow missed by my everyday radar.
i then like to do a quick search on google using more definite terms like chupacabra, dover demon, mothman, aswang and a few others just to see if there's anything new on the subjects. sometimes yes, somtimes no.
and every once in a while i'll run some of those same words or terms on ebay. you might remember that a few months ago i bid on--and won--a beautiful hand-painted tin piece from mexico featuring the chupacabra. anyway, big fun.
well, here are two more chupacabra-related items that i thought looked kinda cool and i oughta share. the first is a chupacabra lawn ornament, hand-made and ready to keep any small critters that don't want their blood sucked out of 'em away!
the second is a work of art that is about the size of an index card. it's a really neat image and they say that the scan doesn't do it justice--but i really, really like it.
and finally, one of my myspace pals, mark zanini from brazil, sent me this awesome pic he did of our perhapanauts! well, some of 'em! thanks so much, mark! as we've said, craig and i are always thrilled to see someone else's handle on our guys and this is waaaaay cool!
that's it for me this week!
i'll try to have the post done sunday night for monday morning so i don't get behind like i did this week...
until then...here are your "five on friday"...
name the star
1. american graffiti, the frisco kid, frantic
2. death wish, into the night, the adventures of buckaroo banzai across the eighth dimension
3. goin' south, continental divide, neighbors
4. silkwood, mask, moonstruck
5. the adventures of baron munchausen, dead again, what dreams may come
see ya!

lost
okay...
lost is one of my all-time favorite shows.
oh, i know that some of you are feeling the lull, feeling that there have been a few episodes lately that have been less than stellar, less than compelling. but that's true of any series--and of life--you've gotta have a few bad days--or flat episodes--so that the good ones are that much more enjoyable. and though there may be a few storylines that seem directionless and not part of the larger, still-enigmatic tapestry, c'est la vie, eh? i still think that it's one of the best written, best acted, and best all-round produced shows on tv--and i just love it!
sharon turned me on to lost. she gave me season one for christmas last year with a smile on her face and a twinkle in her eye, knowing by then my love for story. she was right--i was hooked after the first few minutes and we devoured it together in about a week's time. when season 2 hit stores we did the same and we were glued to the tv when season 3 got off to it's (some people call it rocky) start.
i came in last night exhausted from play rehearsal and, though my intention was to sit myself down and write this blog, i instead curled up with jake, collapsed into bed, and got lost with my favorite castaways. sorry.
i'm feeling a little lost these days. swimming around under a deluge of lines that i still need to memorize for the play, i'd forgotten how acting tends to dredge up a lot of emotions in it's players as we search within ourselves to bring so many emotions out and put them onstage to show them to you all. it seems that, as is usually the case, my life these past two months, has been a blur of emotions and i'm not really sure sometimes where i stand.
i was lost in my relationship with sharon. unsure of what i wanted and not knowing where i wanted the relationship to go, i didn't feel it was fair to lead her on or keep her waiting for what i was going to do. my life is usually rather uncertain. and so i ended it. i'm lost now in heartache. i miss her terribly. and watching lost without her, well...i thought the episode last night, though a diversion, was really well done...but it still felt kinda empty to me.
kinda empty.
lost.
i'll post the happier, upbeat, more crypto-centric blog that i'd intended for yesterday tomorrow. with some trivia and some pictures.
that's all i got.

the kelly goblins
okay...
here's one of my favorite cryptid/alien tales.
i first read about the kelly goblins in dc/factoid books the big book of the unexplained--my favorite--and if you haven't dug up a copy fo this masterpiece for yourself, you're missin' out! also known as the hopkinsville goblins (and i've heard a few people refer to them as the "hopkinsville gremlins"...) in doing my usual searches for all things paranormal i found this great write up of it on wikipedia.
enjoy!
KELLY GOBLINS
On the evening of August 21, 1955, members of the Sutton family were entertaining a visiting friend, Billy Ray Taylor, at their farm house located near the towns of Kelly and Hopkinsville, Kentucky.
When Taylor went to an outside water pump for a drink at about 7.00 p.m., he observed strange lights in the sky to the west. He excitedly told the others about his "flying saucer" sighting, but no one believed him, instead thinking that he had become overly excited after seeing a vivid "shooting star". (Hendry, 190)
At about 8.00 p.m., the family dog began barking loudly, and then hid under the house, where it stayed for the entire event. Going outside a few minutes later, Billy Ray Taylor and Elmer "Lucky" Sutton then asserted that they saw a strange creature emerge from the nearby trees. Jerome Clark describes the creature as: a luminous, three-and-a-half-foot-tall being with an oversized head, big, floppy, pointed ears, glowing eyes, and hands with talons at their ends. The figure, either made of or simply dressed in silvery metal, had its hands raised. (Clark, 309-310)
When the creature approached to within about 20 feet of the Taylor home, the men began shooting at it, one using a shotgun, the other man using a .22 rifle. The creature, they said, then flipped over and fled into the darkness. Sure that they had wounded the creature, Lucky and Billy Ray went out to look for it. Hendry writes that as the men were stepping from the porch, "a taloned hand reached and touched his hair from above." (Hendry, 191) They shot at the creature -- it was perched on an awning over the porch -- and it was knocked from the roof.
Within minutes, Lucky's brother J.C. Sutton said that he saw the same (or a similar creature) peer into a window in the home; J.C. and Billy Ray shot at it, whereupon it too flipped over and fled.
For the next few hours, the witnesses would assert that the creatures repeatedly approached the home, only to be shot at each time they did. One time, the witnesses shot one of the beings nearly point blank, and would later insist that the sound resembled bullets striking a metal bucket. The floating creatures' legs seemed to be atrophied and nearly useless, and they appeared to propel themselves with a curious hip-swaying motion, steering with their arms. Clark writes that "[i]f the creatures were in a tree or on the roof when hit [by gunfire], they would float, not fall, to the ground." (Clark, 310)
Hendry writes that family matriarch "Mrs. Lankford … counseled an end to the hostilities," noting that the creatures had never seemed to try harming anyone. (Hendry, 191) Between appearances from the creatures, the family tried to temper the children's growing hysteria.
At about 11.00 p.m., the Taylor-Sutton crew decided to flee their home in automobiles; after about 30 minutes they arrived at the Hopkinsville police station. Police Chief Russell Greenwell judged the witnesses to have been frightened by something "beyond reason, not ordinary." (Clark, 311) He also opined "[t]hese were not the sort of people who normally ran to the police … something frightened them, something beyond their comprehension." A police officer with medical training determined that Billy Ray's pulse rate was more than twice normal (Clark, 311)
There might have been partial corroboration of the Taylor-Sutton tale: at about 11 p.m., a state highway trooper near Kelly independently reported some unusual "meteors" flying overhead "with a sound like artillery fire." (Clark, 311)
Several police officers accompanied the Taylor-Suttons back to their home, and according to Daniels et al, "[t]he official response was prompt and thorough." (Daniels et. al, 65) In 1998, Karal Ayn Barnett wrote, "By all accounts, the witnesses were deemed sane, not under the influence [of drugs or alcohol], and in such a state of terror, no one involved doubted that they had seen something beyond far their ken."[1]
Police and photographers who visited the home saw many bullet holes and spent shells, and further discovered what Clark describes as "an odd luminous patch along a fence where one of the beings had been shot, and, in the woods beyond, a green light whose source could not be determined." (Clark, 311) Though the investigation was inconclusive, Daniels et al. writes, "Investigators did conclude, however, that these people were sincere and sane and that they had no interest in exploiting the case for publicity." (Daniels, 65)
Police left at about 2:15 a.m., and not long afterwards, the witnesses claimed that the creatures returned. Billy Ray fired at them once more, ruining a window. The last of the creatures was allegedly sighted at about 4.45 a.m. on August 22.

late, late, late...
okay...
workin' hard on this play and learning my lines!
really having fun with the cast and i think it's actually gonna turn out pretty good.
i got a GREAT e-mail from jeremy holstein telling me of his film posted over on you tube (or youtube) featuring william gillette, the guy who wrote this excellent sherlock holmes play (and performed it as the great detective over 1300 times!!!!!) in an audio clip--complete with a montage of photos, pictures, posters, playbills, etc. it's just great! i won't tell you more--you can go and enjoy it yourself at
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=38HgyxMThOw
this is an actual scene that i have in the play and it's just so amazing to hear it like this!
thanks so much, jeremy! you did a wonderful job on this! as i told you in my e-mail, i sent it right over to my director/mentor/friend and he can't wait to show it to the whole cast and crew!
and changing the subject abruptly--
several "random pictures of the week"
for fun, here are a buncha cool marketing gimmicks that definitely put the choopie butt card to shame.
( i particularly like the first one...)
that's all i got right now!
have a great weekend!

the play's the thing...
okay...
so i'm gettin' old...
i know that i've mentioned several times in this venerable blog that i've recently been cast in a production of sherlock holmes and, though i'm not quite sure that i mentioned this, AS sherlock holmes. it's quite and honor and i'm very excited about it...but, damn! that guy's got a lot of lines!!!
i used to be such a quick study with lines--read 'em a couple of times and i got it. but they say that the memory is the second thing to go and i can't remember what the first thing is. (rimshot) holmes is in practically the whole show. last night i tried to give some of my lines to a few of the other, very talented actors with fewer lines, but it doesn't work that way. and it doesn't help that the writer, keen to pick up as much of that rather elaborately verbose victorian era speech, easily doubled if not tripled the word count when it would have been much easier--and clearer-- to edit
"Rather a rash project of yours, Moriarity--even if you have made the streets secure in every respect--to think of using that gun--so early in the evening and in this part of town. I am afraid that in the pleasure of this conversation I am neglecting business which requires my presence elsewhere."
down to
"You're an idiot, Moriarity. I gotta go."
well, maybe not that much, but you know what i mean.
anyway, the play's afoot and that's why i've been burning my candle at both (or all three...) ends. and why i missed monday's post. i will try to be better about it...
here are the answers to last friday's five--
1. the archies' last names : archie________, jughead_______, veronica________, betty________, reggie________
archie andrews, jughead jones, veronica lodge, betty cooper, reggie mantel
2. which color kryptonite made superman turn into a girl?
i made it up. never happened. (as far as i know...) although, by definition of it's erratic and unpredictible properties, red krytonite could do it.
3. in the soup nazi episode of seinfeld, another of the storylines involved jerry being uncharacteristically affectionate with that week's girlfriend, driving george crazy. what was the pet name jerry and his girlfriend had for one another...?
schmoopie
4. jessica alba's characters name on dark angel?
max guevera (x5-452)
5. which richard bachman book features a contest in which 100 adolescent boys compete in an interstate marathon?
the long walk (look for it in the stephen king section)
see ya friday!

so here's a "picture of the week" and some "five on friday" questions and i really hope you have a great weekend!
back in the 70's , dc sold this neal adams superman as a HUGE diecut poster with rubble and debris (sheetrock and cement, et. al.) flying out from supes' figure as he smashed through YOUR WALL! they called it the "wallbuster" and i had one! i loved it! and while they say that you can find anything on ebay, this vintage collectible is the one thing that i have yet to come across. i'd love to have one again and see superman bangin' through my wall with a huge smile on his face.
although, dude--if you're smiling then it couldn't have been very life-threatening and you coulda used the door, huh?...

cryptid anniversary...
okay...
as we come up on the 30th anniversary of my favorite cryptid, the dover demon, (april 21 and 22, 1977, in dover, massachusetts) i keep thinking that i should mount a pilgrimage to that little new england town and check out where it all went down, maybe, hopefully getting a chance to talk with one of the eye witnesses to that strange guy's visit. i think that should we ever have a perhapanauts convention, that should be when and where we do it! (or maybe willow creek...or caguas, puerto rico...or ballay, the philippines...or...)
i mean, point pleasant has a mothman festival every year (haven't gone yet, but i'm dyin' to...), and there are ufo conventions, well, EVERYWHERE (roswell and whatnot...) so why hasn't dover mass gotten on top of this thing?! somebody should be working on this!! a dover demon parade! t-shirts! banners and buttons!
i'd go.
anyway, in light of this upcoming anniversay, i'd thought i start leaning the blog back toward more spooky, kooky fare and post a couple of stories from paranormal@about.com's YOUR TRUE TALES--
here are two from the latest --march-- entries that feature a couple of other creepy creatures.
hope ya dig 'em!
Your True Tales

Water Devil
by JT
My great grandfather has always told me a certain story that sends chills down my spine whenever I'm next to water. This is how my grandpa told the story:
It was late April, 1930. My great grandfather was in Mexico, helping his friend build a house. He had heard reported sightings of a creature in the water that had been eating animals near the lake. Even some children would go missing. My great grandpa paid no attention; he was there for a job. However, he soon became fascinated. The house he was building was near the lake, so he sometimes overheard residents talking about this creature.
One day, My great grandpa woke up to see many people gathering around the lake. He walked to see what was happening. Some residents had several dead lambs in their arms. It turned out that the residents had injected the lambs with poison or fed it to them, and they smothered the lambs with their own blood. That night, the townsfolk tossed the lambs into the lake, hoping to catch this creature.
When morning came, the residents came to see the lambs.... The creature was floating on the surface of the lake. It looked like a large monkey. It was about five feet tall, had thick, brown, wet hair, and had rows of sharp and yellow teeth. This was nothing that anyone had seen before. Had a monkey adapted to water? Or was it even a monkey? This strange creature still haunts my mind to this day. There are still lots of creatures undiscovered in the seas, oceans, and lakes, waiting to be found.
White Mountains Creature
by Tango
It was late October, 1995. My family and I were going camping in the White Mountains, Arizona. As the sun drifted behind the mountains, I felt more tired than usual. We were looking for a camping spot, and the road became narrower and narrower. The trees curled over our heads, but I was tired so I ignored it. Soon the road became so rocky and narrow that we decided to turn back.
However, before we could turn around, we encountered "someone." It was dark outside, and the trees made it harder to see. As we turned our car halfway around, we saw a little girl. She was in tattered clothes, and she looked up at us. Her eyes grew wide in fear, like she had seen a ghost. My dad rolled down the window and asked, "Are you alright?" The little girl trembled in fear and said, "You shouldn't be here, please go back!" My dad froze in confusion. The little girl continued saying that same phrase. My mom was scared and finally said, "Let's go back." So we turned around and ignored it, even though I was freaked out.
We turned out of the narrow road and found a camping spot about 30 minutes later. We weren't very tired when we got there, and I felt as though I had been refreshed. My family set up the tents and made a campfire. We relaxed around the fire, confused and scared, talking about the strange girl. Soon, my father said, "Shhhhh!" My mom laughed at him because he always jokes. This time, he was serious. His face went white, and then I knew something was watching us. I looked around the forest, my heart pumping fast. I didn't hear anything, but I was scared.
Soon, a spine-chilling roar came from the woods. What was it? I was on the verge of screaming in fear. Then, the bushes moved, and something bolted out of the forest and into the light of the fire. It had sharp teeth and no fur. It was the size of a bear, but its eyes were yellow. I was frozen in fear. It stood for ten seconds in the light, then galloped off into the forest. I was horrified. My dog was whimpering and it curled its tail between its legs. This was the most horrifying experience in my life. This creature was extremely skinny, it looked like flesh and bones. This disturbing image of this... "thing" is implanted in my head forever.
The next morning, on our way back home, we stopped to eat. As I was sitting to eat, I overheard some people talking of a creature that was skinny and it galloped through their yard, shrieking. On our way out of the cafe, I told my dad of this. He was shocked. And, to this day, none of us know what haunted us that night in the white mountains.
that's all i got.

as we come up on the 30th anniversary of my favorite cryptid, the dover demon, (april 21 and 22, 1977, in dover, massachusetts) i keep thinking that i should mount a pilgrimage to that little new england town and check out where it all went down, maybe, hopefully getting a chance to talk with one of the eye witnesses to that strange guy's visit. i think that should we ever have a perhapanauts convention, that should be when and where we do it!

Water Devil
I looked around the forest, my heart pumping fast. all the way through...
okay...
more of a quick rant today than anything...
remember how i said last week that i'd tried to post a blog, like, three times before i finally got it to take? a couple other small things happened last week with computers or communication devices--the phone refused to connect when calling nick and craig, got cut off from my dad for no reason, couldn't access my cell phone voicemail--SO...i'm thinkin' that mercury must be in retrograde...dunno for sure, haven't talked to dani about it yet (she usually knows...) but things have not been going smoothly.
(actually, things went very smoothly over the weekend out at craig and trish's for the christening, so i shouldn't complain...)
but here's something else that really got me today.
if you--and yes, i'm talking to YOU--ever work in a deli or a convenience store or a pizza place or a restaurant or any kinda place that serves food, here's the absolute FIRST thing you've got to learn; when cutting through a bagel or hardroll or sandwich or whatever--make sure you cut it ALL THE WAY THROUGH!!!
(and i used to work in a deli and i learned this the hard way, so stay with me, okay...)
see, when people buy stuff like this, 9 times out of ten, they're going to be eating this on the go, in the car. yeah, we shouldn't be eating in our cars--bad for the digestion they say and an easy distraction from what we should be looking at the road. but not if the nice, kind, considerate person who made this sandwich, bagel, or whatever, made it easy by taking the extra mili-second, the extra iota of energy to make sure that they've cleved their culinary work of art all the way through!
(i told this to a [truly wonderful] girl that i was dating a few years ago who worked in an upscale deli and she said that she thinks of it now everytime she cuts a sandwich...)
(woulda liked to've been remembered for more than that, but that's how it goes sometimes...)
got a bagel with cream cheese this morning. too much cream cheese and the bagel half was stuck to the paper it was wrapped in. also, not cut all the way through. as i'm battling THIS mess, a chipmunk ran into the road. and i crushed him.
i usually try to swerve or stop or at least slow down. but i didn't have that chance 'cause i was fighting to tear through the last 1/16th of bagel that was still holding it together.
i then proceded to hate myself all morning long.
sorry for the rant.
that's all i got.
here are the answers to last week's "five on friday"...
1. a long long time ago, i can still remember…
american pie--don mclean
2. one day gonna take a ride on the n train down to coney island…
red dragon tattoo--fountains of wayne
3. they see me mowin’ my front lawn…
white & nerdy--weird al yankovic
4. the legend lives on from the chippawa on down…
the wreak of the edmund fitzgerald--gordon lightfoot
5. girl, ya know we’ve been together for such a long long time…
dick in a box--andy samburg and justin timberlake
6. mama, just killed a man…
bohemian rhapsody--queen
7. oh yeah, i’ll tell you something i think you’ll understand…
i want to hold your hand--the beatles
8. well, my daddy left home when i was three…
a boy named sue--johnny cash
9. guess who just got back today them wild-eyed boys that’d been away…
the boys are back in town--thin lizzy
10. i never knew, i never knew that everything was fallin’ through…
over my head (cable car)--the fray
see ya thursday!

third times the charm...?
okay...
so this is the third time i've attempted to write this blog today.
first at 6:151 this morning, and then again at about 3:30 this afternoon.
each time i got all done with it, but in closing another window on my screen, lost safari as well and this post completely. hopefully this time will be better...
and what i'd said was; not much to say this week.
quiet week.
cold week.
no word from dark horse about the sales figures on perhapanauts: second chances or whether they will green light us for a third installment. craig and i are working on the third outing anyway--you really couldn't stop us--so there will definitely be more 'haps--just not sure when or from where...
i've been working on the play and learning my lines.
here's the poster again, with craig's layout and lettering added. thanks, c!
i'm on my way this weekend to see craig and trish and johnny and ozzie and finally get a chance to meet that new baby girl, the cat! can't wait! and can't wait to have a chance to hang without having a convention all aorund us!
so with nothing much to say, here are a few "random pictures of the week" as well as a double-sized, hopefully twice-as-fun, "five on friday". it's the first lines to some (hopefully) popular songs and we're looking for the song title and the artist who sang it.
have fun!

sherlock holmes
okay...
as many of you keen-eyed sleuths have undoubtedly realized, this blog has been posted at some rather erratic times over the past few weeks. sometimes at stsrange hours of the night, sometimes mid-day, and oft-times, as is the case with this one, a day late.
and it's not likely to get much better for the next month or so...
but now the reason can be revealed...!
i've been cast in a production of sherlock holmes and for the past month or so have been trying to add rehearsals into my already busy schedule. i tell you this because i'm probably gonna be late with another one or two or six of these blogs over the next month or so, so i thought i'd apologize in advance and ask your patience.
another reason i'm telling you this is to show you the awesome play poster...
this play is being directed by my good friend and one of my very first theater teachers, steve press. when i first became interested in theater, steve soon became one of my mentors, filling me up with as much knowledge of acting and stagecraft and presentation and story as i could absorb! he is a very giving teacher and director and every few years i like to go back and enroll in one of his classes to bone up on my acting and hopefully be involved in a production.
and, as i've said, this year, it's sherlock homes.
i have also usually been the one to design and draw the play posters when i've been involved and have done over thirty of them over the years. but when i sat down with steve to talk about this poster, he asked, having read both tellos and the perhapanauts and loving their work, if craig or mike would have the time or desire to help us capture that dime novel/pulp look we were thinking about. but since i have a third artist that i talk to several times a week, one whom i consider to be yet another mentor in my life, i told steve that i knew someone who might fit the bill better, mostly because he was there!
so the next day i called my pal, nick cardy. we had already talked about the play and my role in it and the staging and all sorts of old sherlock homles movies--both of us preferring the basil rathbone adventures--i asked nick if he the time or inclination to do the poster for us. he said he had already been working on it, describing his design ideas to me over the phone, beginning to draw it before we got OFF the phone, and it showed up in my mailbox three days later.
my friend, jd, also in the play as watson, and also a huge comic book enthusiast, said--once he got his voice back--that it was like stepping into the 70's again. or the 30's. i couldn't agree more.
it is gorgeous!
no one else could have captured the mood we were looking for, the sense of foreboding and mystery. blow it up and look at the textures/patterns on holmes' classic deerstalker cap, the shadows in the dungeon, the wisps of fog...nick is a master!
here's another look at something nick "whipped up" for me. several months ago.
while i was on one of our usually hour or so long phone conversations with mike (wieringo) where mike gets some drawing done and i, unable to write and talk on the phone at the same time, usually try to do some housework or something, i made a turkey sandwich and left it on the kitchen counter on a paper towel when i had to run into my studio/office to check something on the computer. while i was gone, the temptation must've been just too much and my dog jake
was able to reach the paper towel and pull the sandwich down to the floor--! when i came back, he was gobbling it up as fast as he could and mike got to hear me yelling at him and laughing at him and trying to continue our converstaion all at the same time and mike just lost it! he was laughing so hard he couldn't speak for a while. funny.
when i told nick the story the next day, i laughed as well. and when he sent me an "autographed" copy of the teen titan showcase book that he said they sent him too many of, the inside front and back covers were decorated with this...
nick apologized 'cause he couldn't remember what jake calls me in my stories about him and so settled on "boss". i think it makes it even funnier!
anyway, that's what i've been up to and my stories about nick.
more, hopefully on wednesday. or thursday.
thanks to craig for the scans of all this.
and thanks to nick for everything!
smell ya later!
oh, and if you're in town, come and see sherlock holmes!
you'll be glad you did!

even more from the show!
okay...
some final photos from the show and a couple scans!
first craig sent over these two shots--i'd forgotten he'd taken them--of me and one of my favorite dc chicks--zatanna!
didn't get this girl's name, but as you can see, she's got an ...emosewa emutsoc!!
(to decipher zatanna's spell--read it backwards!)
thanks to brian we also got a scan of that cool sketch craig did of choopie attacking a cockateau (or is it a cockatiel...?)
as it turns out, the bird's name is coda, and his 'dad' loves to collect sketches of coda by different artists, sometimes, as in this case, also featuring another comics character! cool, huh?
since it's friday, i thought i'd throw out a "random picture of the week" and since i've been trying to make things a little para-normalier around here, here's a pic i picked up offa unexplained-mysteries.com. it's one of a series (it's the closest, clearest shot) of photos of...an aswang! flying! allegedly!
(as always, i WANT it to be true...!)
whaddaya think...?
and your "five on friday" follow yet another theme...
enjoy!
1. what was the name of the spaceship captained by mal reynolds?
2. what was the name of the ship in "alien"?
3. the ship the robinsons got lost in...?
4. the ship in "moby dick"?
5. the ship in tellos?
have a great weekend!
