credit where credit is due...!

okay...

as the owner/copyright holder to a handful of comic book characters, and the writer of several intellectual and creative properties, i am always trying to keep my eye on the artistic rights of individuals and protect those people and their rights in any way i can.

whenever i'm putting the blog together, i'm always looking around to find jpegs on the net that i find either beautiful or funny, scary or cool. and i'm especially eager to give credit when i can find it; the thing about this internet thing is that, in many cases, these images are floating around unsupervised, detached from their original posting, and so you don't always know who did what.

several months ago i posted this gorgeous photo uncredited when i found it being used as the avatar of a new friend on facebook. i thought it was just stunning and wanted to share it with everyone. i was thrilled then, the other day, when i was contacted by joe who told me that this was his photo. here, then, is the photo again with credit listed and a link to the site where it was originally posted.

A hawk's perch at the edge of Randleman Lake is framed Wednesday by the Harvest Moon, near Branson Davis Road in Randolph County. The Harvest Moon comes before or soon after the autumnal equinox. It is simply the full moon closest to that equinox. The photo is by Joseph Rodriguez/Greensboro News & Record

here's an email i got from a friend who is much older than me and though i, personally, cannot remember a time without cell phones, i found parts of it to be kinda funny...

Growing up without a cell phone

Anyone 40 or older might think this is hilarious!

When I was a kid, adults used to bore me to tears with their tedious diatribes about how hard things were. When they were growing up; what with walking twenty-five miles to school every morning.... Uphill... Barefoot... BOTH ways...yadda, yadda, yadda...

And I remember promising myself that when I grew up, there was no way in hell I was going to lay a bunch of crap like that on my kids about how hard I had it and how easy they've got it!

But now that I'm over the ripe old age of forty, I can't help but look around and notice the youth of today. You've got it so easy! I mean, compared to my childhood, you live in a damn Utopia! And I hate to say it, but you kids today, you don't know how good you've got it!

1) I mean, when I was a kid we didn't have the Internet. If we wanted to know something, we had to go to the damn library and look it up ourselves, in the card catalog!!

2) There was no email!! We had to actually write somebody a letter - with a pen! Then you had to walk all the way across the street and put it in the mailbox, and it would take like a week to get there! Stamps were 10 cents!

3) Child Protective Services didn't care if our parents beat us. As a matter of fact, the parents of all my friends also had permission to kick our ass! Nowhere was safe!

4) There were no MP3's or Napsters or iTunes! If you wanted to steal music, you had to hitchhike to the record store and shoplift it yourself!

5) Or you had to wait around all day to tape it off the radio, and the DJ would usually talk over the beginning and @#*% it all up! There were no CD players! We had tape decks in our car. We'd play our favorite tape and "eject" it when finished, and then the tape would come undone rendering it useless. Cause, hey, that's how we rolled, Baby! Can you dig it?

6) We didn't have fancy crap like Call Waiting! If you were on the phone and somebody else called, they got a busy signal, that's it!

7) There weren't any freakin' cell phones either. If you left the house, you just didn't make a damn call or receive one. You actually had to be out of touch with your "friends". OMG !!! Think of the horror... not being in touch with someone 24/7!!! And then there's TEXTING. Yeah, right. Please! You kids have no idea how annoying you are.

8) And we didn't have fancy Caller ID either! When the phone rang, you had no idea who it was! It could be your school, your parents, your boss, your bookie, your drug dealer, the collection agent... you just didn't know!!! You had to pick it up and take your chances, mister!

9) We didn't have any fancy PlayStation or Xbox video games with high-resolution 3-D graphics! We had the Atari 2600! With games like 'Space Invaders' and 'Asteroids'. Your screen guy was a little square! You actually had to use your imagination!!! And there were no multiple levels or screens, it was just one screen.. Forever! And you could never win. The game just kept getting harder and harder and faster and faster until you died! Just like LIFE!

10) You had to use a little book called a TV Guide to find out what was on! You were screwed when it came to channel surfing! You had to get off your ass and walk over to the TV to change the channel!!! NO REMOTES!!! Oh, no! How was life even worth living?!?!

11) There was no Cartoon Network either! You could only get cartoons on Saturday Morning. Do you hear what I'm saying? We had to wait ALL WEEK for cartoons!

12) And we didn't have microwaves. If we wanted to heat something up, we had to use the stove! Imagine that!

13) And our parents told us to stay outside and play... all day long. Oh, no, no electronics to soothe and comfort. And if you came back inside... you were doing chores!

14) And car seats - oh, please! Mom threw you in the back seat and you hung on. If you were lucky, you got the "safety arm" across the chest at the last moment if she had to stop suddenly, and if your head hit the dashboard, well that was your fault for calling "shot gun" in the first place!

See! That's exactly what I'm talking about! You kids today have got it too easy. You're spoiled rotten! You guys wouldn't have lasted five minutes back in 1970 or any time before!

Regards,
The Over 40 Crowd

In Soviet Russia, Spambot spam you!... No. Wait. That didn't work... :P I guess you're suddenly big in the former USSR. I say leave it there, it might attract a new clientèle.

When I was young our phone was a party line. No, that did not mean it was non-stop fun to use, that meant that we shared a phone line with the neighbor.

That's right, my family of six had to wait to make a call if the person next door was using the phone. Today, my family of two has 4 phones to choose from when we want to make a call.

Da. Een Russia, we in-wented spambots.

Nice list, too, Todd. Though, in some of those, I can't help but feel we had the advantage. It was nice when, if you stepped out the door, the folks at work couldn't get in touch with you at all hours of the day and night.

The list really hit home on many things! My comments:

1) Even when the internet became pretty common we still weren't getting a computer for years to come and I STILL had to go to the public library to look it up. I was better off just getting the reference book while I was there!

2) Waiting was always suspenseful. It was a good thing!

3) True. We also could get paddled in school by the principal. I think that stopped when I was in 2nd grade maybe?

4) If you got caught stealing...well...refer back to #3 on the original list!

5) My FAVORITE!!! And remember hitting PLAY and RECORD at the same time to record that favorite song or having to flip the tape over and then hit FAST FORWARD to actually rewind it on the other side?! Ha! Memories!

6) One thing I'm glad is not the same...

7) Yep! And I think I saw a car phone once in my childhood and it was HUGE. I think I ended up getting a beeper when I got older (which was the big thing) and the only texting there was was paging someone 07734 ("hello" --backwards/upsidedown).

8) Okay...another thing I'm glad isn't the same.

9) My favorite was "Pitfall" on Atari 2600. If you walked backwards (offscreen) on the first level you "accidently" ended up on the last level. Glitches were better in those days!

10) And the TV station stopped broadcasting at about 10pm in the early days of it all.

11) It was a horrible wait!

12) Oh, we always had a micorwave. I'm a little too young for that one I think.

13) Those were the good old days! I miss em'.

14) I saw that done, but never had to get the "arm"!

Good list! Great post!

Ha! I think having no caller ID is to blame for my total dislike of the phone to this day. Picking up the phone was like Russian Roulette, back then.

Great post, Todd!
