come and see us in SEATTLE~! EMERALD CITY COMIC CON!!
so, all this weekend, i kept thinking, "man--aside from the answers to the 'five for friday!', i don't have anything for the blog for monday morning...! i mean, matt sent me three funny animal pictures (see below), but otherwise, what am i gonna talk about...?"
and then i looked at the calendar and realized, "oh, wait...i got TONS to talk about!!"
'cause it's a short week for me and craig, suckahs--'cause we leave (very) early this thursday morning for seattle and the emerald city comic con in an attempt to win the hearts and minds of a whole new batch of potential perhapa-fans! tryin' to extend the fan-base, as they say. we will have, as is standard in our travels, both of the perhapanauts trades--perhapanauts:triangle and perhapanauts:dark days! we will have perhapanauts pins and perhapanauts t-shirts available--as well as a very limited supply of all-new, available for sale for the first time anywhere, the awesome-cool perhapanauts hats...!
(awesome-cool perhapanauts hats will be available for order later this month!)
also making it's convention debut is our all new for 2011 perhapanauts convention banner!
these are the images that craig did specifically for this banner but i loved so much that we made the t-shirts! i love this banner and love craig's art and we will be releasing our second wave of shirts, featuring the rests of the team, later this spring! (yes, leanne--you can have the first karl shirt...)
and last, but certainly not least, what is fast becoming a tradition for us, sixth in a series, it's the Perhapanauts Emerald City Comic Con One-Sheet--this one featuring Arisa and Hammerskold and the Creature from the Dump...the Ingot! (not to mention some accompanying text which really has nothing to do with the gorgeous scene craig put together with breath-taking colors by our own mike thomas!! )
don't miss this!
and, of course, along with the hats, all of these items will be available here at the perhapa-store later this month for those of you not in the pacific northwest!
and if you are--come and see us at the show this friday, saturday and sunday at the washington state convention center!

some funny animal jpegs matt sent me...
(when i was about 6, i was playing hide and seek at my friend tommy's house and climbed into their washing machine out in the back vestibule. yeah, that's what i said. not dryer. washing machine. top loader, with the spindle in the middle. i was very flexible and skinny and could get into anything. anyway, it was tommy's father who found me and after getting mildly upset, brought me home and, after my parents got mildly upset, i was made to write "i will not climb into any washing machines or appliances" 25 times. i didn't even know what a appliance was--i thought it was the dryer. for years after, i referred to the dryer as "the appliance".)
(don't climb into appliances, kids.)
and my favorite...

kill all monsters~!
let me tell ya about jason copland...
he is an incredibly talented and diverse artist.
he is a husband. he is a dad. he loves playing hockey.
he envelops himself in music while he works and allows it to color his artwork and lead him along.
he is canadian and almost always has a smile on his face--at least he did in the times i got to hang out with him. which have only been a few. but i'm gonna see him next week. really looking forward to that.
but let's get back to the incredibly talented artist part...
jason has, of course, been so very kind and generous to us over the past few years, doing the aswang story for us in perhapanauts 5 and the flip cover on that issue, the art chores on perhapanauts:molly's story with scott weinstein, and he's recently finished up the artwork on our first "tales from the perhaps" webcomic, "saints and sinners", written by rich woodall and set to debut right here next month!
jason seems to always be working on some project or other--he and i have a couple other irons in the fire as well--but the major one, the BIG one, the one where he's doing some of his most fantastic work yet, is his digital comic KILL ALL MONSTERS! that he does with writer michael may!
i love it. LOVE IT!
and really don't think i need to say anymore than, go over there and take a look for yourself. you, too, will fall in love with the look and the design, the slightly retro weight of it, the fine draughtsmanship. what jason does in the space of one panel should be taught as curriculum to up and coming comic book artists--and the textures and lighting he's able to achieve with those shading patterns...! just fantastic!
here are a couple panels/pages, but as i said, do yourself a favor and go immerse yourself in jason and michael's kill all monsters! world for a little while. you'll thank me.

i gotta go~!

eric's classic comic cover~!
so, i have no idea what kinda crazy experiments the air force is doing out in north dakota where they are somehow able to give a select few an extra 8 to 12 hours in a day, but i think it's something that the perhapanauts need to look into...!
somehow--somewhere!--our pal eric henson is finding time, or compressing time, or borrowing time, or soaking up time with a sham-wow...i dunno. but along with his duties in the air force, as a husband and dad to two small and adorable kids, as a preacher, and, from what i'm told and have experienced myself, as an all-around-just too-nice-a-guy, he's able to find time to, not just work on a now-extended chapter of the upcoming perhapanauts story arc, but crank out a cool classic comic cover of his own...get this...on The SIDE~!
i dunno how you're doing it, eric. i am definitely suspicious. but thanks so much for sharing your talents with us and our crazy characters!
(the funny thing here is, i was so excited to see eric's drawing that it didn't register to me that i knew that cover. very well, as a matter of fact. i wrote that issue of x-factor--one of my first jobs at marvel--and eric didn't even know it at the time! too funny.)

The Ladies of FCCR! An Interview with Ellie and Lily Egleton~!
as any loyal reader of this blog knows, i am a loyal reader of a magazine called the First Class Comic Review, a comics related publication that primarily covers the oft-ignored all-ages comics that i like to think of as FUN comics~! FCCR's creators/editors/prime reporters are sisters Lily and Ellie Egleton and i thought, as they did such a keen job of interviewing me, i might turn the tables and interview them.
here is that interview.
1. As a point of departure, could you please tell me your names, ages, and if you like your sister or not?
Lily: My name is Lily Egleton, I am Nine years old and I love my sister very dearly. She’s my best ever friend. J
Ellie: Hi, my name is Ellie Egleton and I am 15! Lily is a great little sister, she’s fun to play squad with and talk to about anything! Lil’s my sister and my best friend!
2. You both seem to have a very deep love for comics; what drew you to the world of superheroes?
Lily: I love comics because when I was a baby my Daddy read me lots and lots of old comics and I started to like them more and more!
Ellie: Like Lily said, Dad is the one that got us into comics. He read them to us for bedtime stories until I was old enough to read them on my own. I also enjoyed watching superhero cartoons on the TV, especially Batman Adventures and the 90’s Spider-Man and X-Men cartoons, I would play with the action figures and get stickers of my favourite heroes to stick into my little sticker book. Things like that really did get me into the comic world!
3. You are probably the youngest journalists I've ever met. What inspired you to want to write about comics and produce a magazine like First Class Comic Review?
Lily and Ellie : One day when we went to our local comic shop, Ace Comics in Richmond, Surrey, we were talking to Guy and Richard, who run the shop, about how there wasn‘t a UK comic magazine. When we all got home Dad said why don’t we do one…so we did!
4. Though you both have quite a few stories and interviews under your belts by this time, who are some of the other writers on your staff? How did you meet them?
Lily: I met the other staff because Ellie knew them from school. She became very good friends with them and we decided to ask them if they would like to help us with FCCR and they did! J
Ellie: We have Abi Penhryn-Lowe and Beth Vince who write and draw for the Manga Corner, who I met in my early days of Secondary School and immediately became good friends with the two. Kieran Pereira our Tech Guy who writes the Tech Corner, who I’m friends with because I used to sit next to him in French and Spanish in Year 8 and then we have Arun Kakar who we got to know at Free Comic Book Day last year and since then we’ve been going to comic cons and comic shops all around London together!
5. Your magazine is in direct competition with publications like Wizard. How is FCCR different than Wizard?
Lily: I think FCCR is very different because Wizard focuses more on films and T.V. Wizard also have a different style of setting all their work out. FCCR is done by much younger writers and Wizard is a bit more adult!
Ellie: I think one of the big differences between the two magazines is that Wizard is far more established and well known than we are as it has been printing for years now and is also well advertised when we’re only in a few UK shops. Soon though, the biggest difference will be that Wizard will only be in available to read in a digital format and FCCR will remain in printed copies.
6. So far, what is your favorite article/interview you've written?
Lily: My favourite article I’ve written is the Tiny Titans Character Page in First Class Comic Review #4, because I love Tiny Titans! My favourite interview would be the one me and Ellie did together which was the one with you in FCCR #2 because it was fun and our first ever one! J
Ellie: I think my favourite article I have written would be the Marvel and DC Key Characters A-Z because I learnt a lot about characters that I hardly knew anything about. It was also fun thinking about characters beginning with A, B, C, D and so on! My favourite interview I have done was the same as Lily’s because it was great to do our first interview and it was great to build up a friendship with you, Todd! I also enjoyed Chris Giarrusso’s interview in FCCR #4 because of mine and Lily’s love for Mini Marvels!
7. Now that you have tasted the life of the journalist, do you think that this might be a career you would pursue in the future?
Lily: Yes Todd, I would love to have this career and write and draw comics when I’m older! J
Ellie: Now that I have done FCCR, I think I would defiantly want a career in the comic world…hopefully writing Batman or the X-Men!
8. Who is your favorite comic book character? ...and what is your favorite single comic book?
Lily: My favourite comic book character is the Black Cat because when I was very young (A baby) my Dad read me the old Peter Parker, Spectacular Spider-Man comics and I grew to like Black Cat because of her relationship with Spidey. My favourite single comic is Tiny Titans #33 ‘The all Robin issue’ because I just love Robin! I also love the Super Hero Squad Halloween Special, issue number 10, mostly because of the X-Men dressed up as the Wizard of Oz characters. J
Ellie: My favourite character has to be Jean Grey because when I was little I watched the 90’s X-Men video with the Dark Phoenix Saga on so from there Mum and Dad bought me the Marvel Legends green phoenix costumed Jean Grey toy for Christmas, which since then has been my favourite toy! Coming in really close though is Harley Quinn because as I said before I used to watch the Batman Adventures cartoons and as soon as the episode, Harley and Ivy came on I was hooked! Now my favourite single comic is a tough one…but I think I’ll have to go with X-Men Origins Jean Grey written by Sean McKeever (who we got to interview in FCCR #5) and illustrated by Mike Mayhew but I also like the X-Men First Class Special #1, written by Jeff Parker because my letter was published in there which I was very happy about!

seems everybody had a good time the other day, speculating on who would throw up first on the cover of justice league no.6. rich (woodall) said, 'let's do more!' and as he and i got to talking, i remembered a cover that might lend itself to some of that kind of fun...
back when i was younger and couldn't get enough of those good ol' justice leagues, i remember reading a letter column in issue 105, i think, where someone wrote in asking why, out of all the heroes pictured on the cover of 102, were batman and wonder woman looking only at each other? was there something up between them? was this the (subtle) beginnings of a romance between the amazon princess and the caped crusader? admittedly i hadda go back and look at the cover myself and i went, yeah, what the hell...? (years later, when i had befriended that particular cover's artist, nick cardy, i posed the question to him, asking him what his motivations were for having batman and wonder woman gazing at each other. he said, "who?")
anyway, here is that cover along with the invitation to put in your own thoughts of what mighta been going on between these two.
here's what i put...
with rich's formidable photoshop skills (everybody say, 'thanks, rich~!'), he went and made it super easy for ya!
if you wanted wonder woman speaking first and batman responding...
...or bats speaking first, etc... you get the idea! write a whole back and forth if you want--have fun!
and with that, rich and i say...

love for the arrow~!
as for who would throw up first, my thought was immediately GA. i love him but, like batman, he's only human.
green lantern was a test pilot and was trained for just this sitch--plus he (and that ring) have helped him past the vertigo of being a space jockey.
flash's body has been conditioned (and protected) by the speed force to be able to withstand a lot more sever punishment than this.
likewise, aquaman's body/muscles/ears have been sculpted to withstand the tremendous pressures on the ocean floor--i don't think something as mundane as spinning is gonna affect him.
martian manhunter is a shape-shifter and possess a totally different physiognomy--do martian's even get dizzy? and if they did, couldn't he then adjust his own inner ear to neutralize the effects of the wheel?
wonder woman--i would imagine that amazon training prob'ly puts test pilot training to shame. if you were a malicious amazonian drill sergeant wouldn't you devise the test that suspended a bound recruit upside-down from a rope and then wound it up like a yo-yo and then let go and let her twirl around at close to mach speed 'til she passed out? i know i would. amazon up, ladies!
leaving green arrow. as i said, love the guy, but he's just a man. maybe he's trained himself to be one of the toughest, athletic specimens on the planet, but that boston bite chilli you had for lunch is comin' up, ollie.
that's it for now~!

it's been a couple years or so since we last took a pass at casting the inevitable perhapanauts movie, but our newest perhapa-pal--and haps artist--eric henson, set his mind to the task a week or so ago and conjured up this impressive list of his picks!

happy new year (chinese style)!
well, the perhapanauts classic comic cover challenge is officially over and, hopefully, everyone should be receiving their hats soon. well, maybe not christian. he moved and didn't tell me...
but i do, once again, want to thank everyone who participated in the challenge--for your time and your talent!
and thanks too to everyone who looked at them! good lookin'!
that was fun. we should do that again sometime...
in the midst of all the hubbub and excitement of our perhapanauts classic comic cover challenge, i received this happy new year greeting from uriel that i i am thrilled to share with you all...!
May the sun shine all day long
Everything go right and nothing go wrong
May those you love bring love back to you
And may all the wishes you wish come true
when i thanked uriel and checked to make sure it was cool to post it, he replied...
"Sure, no prob, feel free to use the image as you like. Don't worry about posting later, since traditional Chinese festivities don't officially end until 17th.
By the way, this is year of the metal (or white or golden) rabbit. Also, while in European cultures it's said that you can see a man on the moon, East Asian see a rabbit."
thanks, uriel! beautiful job!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
and here, for no real reason except that i found them funny, are a couple of jokes i picked up along the way...
An Amish boy and his father were in a mall. They were amazed by almost everything they saw, but especially by two shiny, silver walls that could move
apart and then slide together again.
The boy asked, "What is this, father?" The father, never having seen an elevator, responded, "Son, I have never seen anything like this in my life. I don't know what it is."
While the boy and his father were watching with amazement, a fat old lady struggled up to the moving walls and pressed a button. The walls opened, and
the lady walked into a small room. The walls closed and the boy and his father watched the small numbers above the walls light up sequentially. They continued
to watch until it reached the last number, paused, and then the numbers began to light in the reverse order. Finally, the walls opened again and a gorgeous
24-year-old blonde woman stepped out.
The father, not taking his eyes off the young woman, said quietly to his son......
"Go get your mother."
A man walks into the bedroom with a sheep on a leash and says...
"Honey, this is the cow I make love to when you have a headache."
The wife, lying in the bed reading a book, looks up and says, "If you weren't such an idiot, you'd know that's a sheep, not a cow."
The guy replies, "If you weren't such a presumptuous bitch, you'd realize I was talking to the sheep."
i feel like i've been shovelling non-stop for the past two and a half months, so i needed something to make the snow look funny...
big...?!
i know we're tryin' to do a family show here, but this was just too f#%&in' funny...!
i'll take two boxes of thin mints and a samoas, please.
that's it for today!
smell ya later~!
PC4: Jason Copland
so this is the last of our entries in the PERHAPANAUTS CLASSIC COMIC COVER CHALLENGE, and what better guy to have batting clean-up than our own jason copland...? (or...is there a hockey term that's like batting clean-up? 'cause he'd like that better... : )
i say "our own" about various people here on the blog because they're part of the 'family'; they post comments and notes to one another, drop me e-mails and send me links to crazy happenings in the world from time to time, come and see us at shows if they're not too far away...
i also say "our own" --and am being kind of possessive when i say it, too--about the artists who've helped us out and lent their talents to the perhapanauts over the years, who are part of the 'inner circle' as it were. jason, rich, leanne...and on deck, matt and christian, lauren monardo, eric henson...thank you all...!
but, blah, blah, blah...i got off on a tangent...
here's jason's sweet classic cover!
the inspiration
the homage
special thanks, as jason has already said, to rich woodall for helping out with the trade dress on jason's cover!
always there, that rich woodall...!
jason was so excited about the challenge...but busy! he threw me this early concept sketch the day after the announcement, just to let me know he was onboard...!
and while i recognized the alpha flight reference and cover right away, i was pretty sure that john (byrne) had played with this design/device on another cover somewhere...
...just proving that good ideas never go bad.
PC4: Tom Stevens
my pal and ghost-hunting buddy, tom stevens, comes off as a quiet kinda guy, but you can tell that he's always got something on his mind. what's even cooler--and most times funnier--is that when he does speak or come out with something, it's usually very insightful...or hilarious. and then sometimes, when you least expect it, he just pops up and says, 'oh, yeah, by the way, here's a submission for the challenge.'
2 cool.
PC 4: Rich Woodall
okay...
we'll get right to our PERHAPANAUTS CLASSIC COMIC COVER CHALLENGE in just a minute, but i wanted to take advantage of rich's generous nature to make this brief statement...
several of you noticed, in the days following our original announcement of this little exercise, that i swiftly changed the name of it from the PERHAPANAUTS CLASSIC COMIC COVER CONTEST to the PERHAPANAUTS CLASSIC COMIC COVER CHALLENGE. why do this, todd? you might ask. it doesn't really change the cool alliteration that much and it still gives us the abbreviated PCCCC--now shortened to the even cooler PC4 (although i'd really like to figure out how to make the 4 smaller, you know, like PC to the fourth power...)
anyway, the motivation was this; i really don't like contests. not when it comes to art, anyway. i think all art is beautiful and i know that each and every artist i've ever met pours so much of him or herself into each line, each stroke. art is personal and an expression and, to me, to judge that in any way is just kinda wrong. art is subjective; who are we to say who is the better artist? rembrandt or van gough? da vinci or degas? frank miller or art adams? i dig them all! sure, some may appeal to one person more than the other, but i'd rather celebrate each and every wonderful piece and skip the popularity contest.
with that i shifted from contest to challenge. no judges, no voting, no winner. everyone's a winner! every cover is special! thanks so much, you guys, for sending in such inspired covers!
that said, the grand prize that each entrant should be receiving in the mail either today or tomorrow (some have already gotten theirs, right warren...?) is this rather elegant and stylish perhapanauts ball cap, complete with bill and baby blue embroidered lettering!
i like it this way.
so no more contests--only challenges here at the haps.
thanks for reading.
and now back to our regularly scheduled challenge...
RICH WOODALL
because we chat a lot (and are working on a project together at the moment...) rich kept me posted with regular updates of the progress on his cover challenge. so cool to see it take shape and come together!
the inspiration... and the homage!
PC4: Christian Leaf
such a tease...
my half-brother, christian, here posted a small detail of his classic cover choice over on his own blog a few weeks ago, really piquing my--and several others--curiosity on what he was doing. when he sent it over, it all fell into place, but what a way to build the anticipation, buddy...!
i think it's okay for me to say that i like this one a lot...
though mostly because i am particularly partial to the original artist...
the inspiration
the homage
