okay...
we'll get right to our PERHAPANAUTS CLASSIC COMIC COVER CHALLENGE in just a minute, but i wanted to take advantage of rich's generous nature to make this brief statement...
several of you noticed, in the days following our original announcement of this little exercise, that i swiftly changed the name of it from the PERHAPANAUTS CLASSIC COMIC COVER CONTEST to the PERHAPANAUTS CLASSIC COMIC COVER CHALLENGE. why do this, todd? you might ask. it doesn't really change the cool alliteration that much and it still gives us the abbreviated PCCCC--now shortened to the even cooler PC4 (although i'd really like to figure out how to make the 4 smaller, you know, like PC to the fourth power...)
anyway, the motivation was this; i really don't like contests. not when it comes to art, anyway. i think all art is beautiful and i know that each and every artist i've ever met pours so much of him or herself into each line, each stroke. art is personal and an expression and, to me, to judge that in any way is just kinda wrong. art is subjective; who are we to say who is the better artist? rembrandt or van gough? da vinci or degas? frank miller or art adams? i dig them all! sure, some may appeal to one person more than the other, but i'd rather celebrate each and every wonderful piece and skip the popularity contest.
with that i shifted from contest to challenge. no judges, no voting, no winner. everyone's a winner! every cover is special! thanks so much, you guys, for sending in such inspired covers!
that said, the grand prize that each entrant should be receiving in the mail either today or tomorrow (some have already gotten theirs, right warren...?) is this rather elegant and stylish perhapanauts ball cap, complete with bill and baby blue embroidered lettering!
i like it this way.
so no more contests--only challenges here at the haps.

Incredible work! I love the choice of cover inspiration here. The theme fits so well with the Perhapanauts and your color scheme is perfect! How are you guys getting that "The Perhapanauts" cover lettering template at the top of your images?
Thanks guys! As I was tellin' Todd and Craig, this cover has very special meaning to me... I'd grown up with comics all around me, mostly GI Joe, Transformers, stuff like that, always liked them, but it wasn't an obsession yet... until I moved to Stuttgart Arkansas at 12 years old. First day in town, I rode my bike down 2 blocks to a 7-11 went in and saw this cover. I didn't really know who the xmen were, I think I'd seen them before, but never really took notice. This was THE comic that made me want to be a comic artist, also the comic that started my obsession with comics. So, I owe it all to John Bogdanove, his cover grabbed my 12 year old imagination and really inspired me. Oh, and Eric, email me and I'll hook you up w/ some trade dress info!
Great stuff, Rich! And Lawrence did a top notch job on the colours, too!
And a special shout out goes to Mr. Woodall for his efforts in helping me get my trade dress working on my Perhapanauts cover homage. He is true gentleman!
