sundry!

okay...

just a smorgasbord of stuff today. letters, nonsense, trivia...

have fun!

Square Watermelons

A round watermelon can take up a lot of room in a refrigerater and the usually round fruit often sits awkwardly on refrigerator shelves. Smart Japanese Farmers have forced their watermelons to grow into a square shape by inserting the melons into square, tempered glass cases while the fruit is still growing on the vine.

i've been getting excited about having actual letter to feature on the letters page in every issue of the all-new, all-different PERHAPANAUTS and have been asking people at shows and elsewhere to write in! i did this in seattle when we were at the emerald city con last month and got this email a few days later. i was GONNA put it in the comic, but realized that it was more about the show than the book and thought it might get better response (and exposure!) here...

ladies and gentlemen! our new pal, nick easterday--

Name: Nick Easterday
Comments: Just met you guys at ECCC today [my first con!]. After the show I got loaded and went to a Ladies Lube wrestling party [put on by a local rugby team]!! Gotta love the big city. So now I'm drunk and sending you my praise. Keep up the cryptid shenanigans!!

now i have seen some great letters in my day, but...come on! that's the greatest piece of prose i've read in a long time...and i've been reading a LOT of stuff!

thanks, nick! you definitely rock!

A most excellent letter indeed, but I really love me some creative advertising. Hadn't seen those before.

The only Fiver I can muster an answer for is number 3. I'm gonna say a velocipede has a car.

A good weekend to all.

from our pal, roger ash at westfield comics...

Hi Todd,

Those square watermelons just look wrong. I’m not sure that I could bring myself to eat one.

Here’s my attempt at your 5 for Friday.

1) Mickey Mouse (it seems like he would be the first, but maybe you’re trying to trick us.)
2) Wyoming (?)
3) Since I’m guessing it’s part velociraptor, I’ll say sharp, pointy teeth
4) The Dakota
5) Dr. Teeth, Sgt. Floyd Pepper, Janice, Zoot & Animal

Roger

3) 50
4) The Dakota
5) - Dr. Teeth
- Zoot
- Janis
- Animal
- ????

I had heard about the square watermelons before, but never get tired of seeing them. They's funky. Love the ads as well.

As for the five for Friday, other than The Dakota, featured in "Rosemary's Baby," I got nothing.

As for that letter, priceless

Hey Todd,
You gotta hand it to those Japanese. What will they think of next?

That letter was so cool. The creative ads were even better.

The 5er has me a bit stumped, but here's what I've got:
2. S Dakota
3. Fast feet?

later.

Yep - I've seen the square watermelons pics before. I wish someone would grow & sell those in the US. I also love the creative ads. I hadn't seen those before.

Yeah!! That was a fun night. Slightly bummed it didn't make the comic... but I'm sure there will be other nights of shenanigans. Along the lines of the series... I was hanging out with a friend who showed me a picture of a demon that was taken in this old mining town a couple mountain ranges over. My first reaction "Lets go! I want to feel the presence of evil too!"

great letter, great ads, watermelons - um, i recently saw the pics going around email land of the older asian lady with bound feet - so, not so great. nah, they're cool, but i wonder how many other things they've pondered binding and reshaping...
