ghostly encounters, paranormal state, monster quest...

okay...

too much to do today to really stay too long.
i am SWAMPED with work!
(not complaining.)
(just busy.)

i've been watching a lot of the spooky shows on bio and discovery and history and a&e, and can now say that i am totally spooked out. sure, there are some episodes of each that are a bit stiff or less interesting than others, but i'm in that zone. spook me! scare me!

also, i took a moment the other day to read over some of the newest YOUR TRUE TALES over on my favorite paranormal@about.com and couldn't stop thinking about this one--the one i've posted below.

maybe because i used to work those late shifts with mentally handicapped people. or maybe because i've been watchin' all those ghost shows.

or maybe it's because i've actually heard a disembodied voice right here in my own home! (and maybe i should have sharon write up her version of that little weirdness for an upcoming post...? whaddaya say shay...? remember...?)

anyway, here it is.
yes, it's a cheap way for me to dodge doing a longer entry, but i really gotta get back to work. you'll see why in about a month!

Nightshift Ghost
by Veronica

I am a home healthcare provider for the developmentally disabled and am currently working in a house that has to be haunted. Let me explain why. First of all, the home is located in Chesterton, Indiana, and I split shifts with two other ladies. I work 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. and the other shifts are 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. and 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Now, with that out of the way, let me begin.

Our client moved into this house in October of this year and, of course, there were adjustments to be made. By her being mentally disabled, we knew that her adjusting period would be equivalent to that of a child. She normally goes to bed around 8 p.m., when the 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. person is working. The young lady that works this shift came in on the second day in order for me to leave, but she had quite a story about the previous night.

When she put the client to bed, she went into the living room to complete her paperwork. Not ten minutes later, the client came running down the hall whining that she couldn't go to sleep because "the man won't leave me alone." We both laughed it off... nervously, I might add. About a week later, the knocking began. The house would be quiet, and out of nowhere there would be light knocking on the walls and even coming from the floor. Then our nightshift person (10 p.m. to 6 a.m. ) told us that she saw a shadow cross the hall from our client's bedroom to the bathroom. Thinking it was the client, she got up to check on her. When she looked in the bathroom, there was no one there, and the client was still in her bed fast asleep. Needless to say, she was totally freaked out.

My experience happened on Thanksgiving morning as the client was taking a nap. I was sitting on the couch watching TV. From the couch, we are able to look down the hall and see into the kitchen. No one else was there except me and the client. I clearly heard a woman say, "Please help me..." and she began to sob. I am getting spooked out just writing about this. Anyway, thinking that it was the client, I got up to check on her. She was fast asleep -- and that's when it hit me. Our client has a speech impediment that prevents her from speaking clearly. The voice I heard was speaking as clearly as you or I. I went back into the living room and vowed to ignore every noise from then on.

I am spooked every day going to work, but it's my job and I have to deal with it.

there ya have it.
dja get the creeps?
i did.

oh, yeah.
and after i let you see those two unfinished pages the other day, i thought it would only be fair to show you them completely done in all their rico splendor!
ain't he great?
enjoy!

gotta go!
smell ya later!

Very creepy. Sounds almost like THE GRUDGE. I don't really have any stories along those lines, though my mother had an eldery tongue-tied aunt who couldn't speak a lick, but during one holiday her brother arrived at the house unexpectedly. When she saw him she said, "Thank God, Billy's here." Then her head slumped down died right on the stop.

My mom also had a cuckoo clock that always stopped on the exact minute that Uncle Billy died. No matter how many times it was fixed, it always stopped. I wonder if she still has it? May have to find out.

I didn't know you worked in a mental institution (for lack of a PC word), Todd? My dad did too in the summers between college. He got locked in one day and nobody would let him out until his supervisor came in the next day.

Definitely spooky. Leaf, I LOVE your story about Billy. Definitely a book worthy episode.

We've had a share of spooky things happen here - mostly my dh as the witness. I don't always believe him, though I probably should.

Some highlights are:

-my dh asked me what I thought the thing in our room was the previous night and at first I didn't know what he was talking about and then it all came to me that something had woken me up - it had kinda materialized in front of our closed windows and then flew without wings and perched above our closet. All I can say was it was like a gnome or large (< > 1') furbie. Anyway, it woke me up and I remember asking Richard, "What's that," and he told me to shhhhh and then I just drifted off to sleep again - why, I don't know. You'd think that would keep me awake.

-Our oldest son, when he was younger, saw the shadow of a lady pass along our hallway, who he said looked like she had fruit on her head. I love teasing him on that one - a child haunted by Carmen Miranda. :-)

-The boys share a walk-in closet that is between their bedrooms. Once they were in their rooms and each saw a hand come out of the closet into their rooms waving a handkerchief. One saw black hand with a white kerchief, the other a white hand with a black kerchief. They both immediately left their rooms and were face to face with each other in the hall. Chayen said that it had to have been a paranormal hand because of the color and how it wasn't attached to anything.

-The spookiest of all for me, however, was when a woman from church came to visit me to tell me about something that was worrying her. Her 6 year old son was seeing things, specifically a disembodied black hand and forearm that would appear from below his bed and it really scared him. (She was going through a very stressful separation at the time, so of course, I chalked it up to that.)

When Richard got home from fishing, we were sitting and talking and all of a sudden he got a weird look on his face as he looked just beyond my shoulder and said, "Go away." I asked him what he was talking about and he said that a black hand came up behind me. Needless to say, my jaw dropped and I told him about the woman's son. Always the skeptic I drilled him, but he swore that no one told him anything about any of that. Even though, like almost all such stories, it has a possible normal explanation - namely Richard somehow knew - it still spooks me to think about how creeped out I was at the time.

This happened a couple of days after Christmas. After we came home from grocery shopping my daughter and I watched one of the movies that she got for Christmas. After that went off she went up to her room to bed. I try to wait until after she is in bed to watch scary movies 'cause I don't want her having nightmares. And she's scared of everything. I watched STAY ALIVE. After it went off I walked passed the front of the house and noticed that the front door was open. I couldn't believe that I left the front door open for at least 4 hours since I had been outside without noticing. I can see the foyer from where I was sitting on the sofa. So anyway scary movie and front door wide open. I went upstairs and checked on my daughter she was sound asleep in her bed. Then I called my dog if you don't know she's old and lazy. I've had her ten years - I don't really know how old she was when I got her but even if she is only 11 that's pretty old for a dog right. So I said, "Angel, if somebody broke in the house you'd at least bark right?" She looked at me like I was crazy. So then I checked the whole house slowly looking for burglars and murderers. I couldn't find anyone. Very creepy.

Leaf, you beat me to the GRUDGE comparison. Asshole. :)

I've never experienced any paranormal activity but Suzanne swears our house is still occupied by the previous owner. Every once in a while we here something like footsteps upstairs and as I'm dismissing it as just the cats chasing each other, she points out that the cats are in the room with us. That's about it.

Those are all pretty creepy!
I was getting spooked reading all the comments, then I read what Matt called Leaf, and I just about fell outta my chair laughing.

There's a point in STAY ALIVE where one of the characters says that you play this game enough you start seeing things. I was thinking as I was checking around my house that watching the movie enough makes you see things too.

Todd - I forgot to say I'd like to hear Sharon's story about the paranormal encounter your house.

You're all creeping me out!

Except there's knocking in my walls and floors every time the forced hot water heat comes on in my house, so that doesn't freak me out...

I like the stories...make me feel a lil normal...;)
I got a bunch of experiences in my bag...
I'll go through here and see if I posted any other than the one I know of...just do not want to be double posting stories...;)

I've watched that new show, Paranormal State on A&E. I prefer Ghost Hunters. Maybe it's because I relate to the blue-collar guys who started TAPS. The kid in Paranormal State always brings these cute co-eds with him on cases, then warns them that the demon/spirit/entity that they are about to encounter is targeting him specifically, but he is willing to face the demon/spririt/entity and risk his life just to help the victim of the haunting/possession be free of it. Then the co-eds give him that look and you know exactly why he's willing to risk it all: nookie.
