guard duty!

okay...

so, okay...i've admitted here that there are times when i become somewhat pre-occupied by certain books, tv shows, movies, music--i think we all do this to some extent and i think it indicates the things we're passionate about. i'm passionate about story and so those tend to be the things that, for a given amount of time, absorb me completely.

i mentioned last week that sharon and i are currently watching season three of grey's anatomy. my sister, suze, pointed out that, as any show will do, grey's has some flat storylines/sections in season three, but that things get better. (and while i have noticed that they have focused more on the soap opera than the medical stories here in the first few episodes, i can be more forgiving as we're watching episodes back-to-back-to-back...) but thank you so much, squeeze, for the head's up and recommendation! love ya! : )

another little obsession i've been going through over the past few weeks, is a podcast/radio show called "guard duty". for anyone with any knowledge of comics and/or superheroes, this show is a must! created, written, and produced by then-suny binghamton student, jordan d. white, guard duty is a fully dramatized radio show focusing on the conversations of a team of superheroes while on monitor duty in their satellite headquarters. to me, the premise itself is genius. jordan was, obviously, keen to write some comics, but needed to create a device that would allow him to tell his stories using the medium he had at hand--college radio! he tells his story through the conversations of two different characters each week--the rotating roster of members of the Earth Guard--and through some beautifully written dialogue and skillfully developed characters, the story begins to unfold.
and unfold.
and unfold.

the Earth Guard themselves are, for the sake of familiarity, archetypical and, initially, you will recognize nods and tips of the hat to the Avengers and Justice Leagues of the '70's. but as the series continues, jordan allows the characters to grow and to blossom beyond what we assume they are going to do and the series just becomes one exciting twist and turn after another...all told from, what we would expect to be, rather dull and boring sessions of monitor duty.

if i may alliterate for a moment, Guard Duty is clever, compelling, and captivating! and though, if you listen to the episodes one after another like i did, you might find yourself fast-forwarding through the intro each time, you won't want to miss a single word of...Guard Duty!

if you love comics--and who doesn't--you owe it to yourself to go and check this out!

you can listen to them for free through jordan's site, wax-work.com

"The Earth Guard - the planet's most powerful heroes united in the common goal of protecting the innocent people of planet Earth and defending them from threats of all kinds. From the Guard Tower, their base of operations, they watch over the citizens and spring into action at any sign of danger. To that end, the Guard take shifts monitoring events all over the globe. Sooner or later, they all have to take a shift of… Guard Duty."

wendy sent me this link last week, but i didn't want to post it until after my crypto-gallery on friday.
this has a gallery featuring forty different cryptids from around the world. as wendy pointed out, many of them are bigfoot variations, but here are many other unusual creatures here. check 'em out.

(also, did you know that the only state that has NOT had a report of any bigfoot type of creature is hawaii? and that the only continent that hasn't had bigfoot reports is antarctica?)

Funny you should post about "Guard Duty" now as I was just thinking about "My Dinner with Andre" and how I was shocked by how much I enjoyed a movie about two guys just sitting at a table and talking.

I'll be sure to check this out.

Hey , That "Guard Duty" sounds like a great concept.
I'll have to check it out.

At the bottom you pointed out that Hawaii has not had a bigfoot sighting. I'd like to mention that they do have the Menehune, little people that build great earthworks in 1 night (from statues to ponds to tree lined roads, creating a tunnel like canopy).

here's a link, if you're interested:

catch you next time.

Just to clarify, the Kelly Goblins/Green Men is from Kelly, KY. They just went to Hopkinsville the night of the encounter.

My grandfather was the sheriff of Crofton at the time and always said they were just shooting at stray cats. For some reason the UFO/Cryptid folks never wanted to interview him about it.
